    Unhappy 91 320i NO SPARK AND FUEL AGHHH

    Alright hello everyone


    I have a 91 320i that I bought off of my dad a few months ago. The car originally ran after having its fuelpump replaced. Car sat outside the garage during the rainy season for a few days and when I tried to move the car It wouldn’t start. I immediately thought the ecu got wet cause the cowell on the windshield is cracked and from what I’ve read I know that it’s happened to a few people out there.

    I then took out the ECU to check for water damage but can’t seem to find any. So I thought the ecu should be fine. Being the idiot and lazy mfcka that I am I decided to buy another fuelpump thinking that the old one might’ve been defective. Checked the fuel pump And saw that the sending unit looked really old and funky so I replaced the fuel pump/sending unit AGAIN and tried cranking the car and it finally started!!

    I let the car warm up for a little while and started packing up all my tools and I shut off the car to wash my hands. Decided to take it for a test drive But wouldn’t turn over again. I checked for fuel and spark and nada so I replaced the CPS, checked all the relays, fuses and grounds and still nothing.

    Any of you have an idea to wht it could be? I don’t think my car has EWS since it’s so early but I’m not very familiar with m50s.

    Help appreciated 😔 just about had it with this thing

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Here we don't just throw parts at a car, we start with diagnosing it first.

    No, your car doesn't have EWS, so put that aside.

    1) Do you own a multi-meter?
    2) If so, did you test the CPS - Crank position sensor?
    3) What brand of CPS did you install?

    There are more questions to ask, but lets start there first.

    Hey Dworthy,

    No I don’t have one but I can definitely get my hands on one. The cps I put on the car is an oem one off of my other running 320i

    Thank you for taking the time to try and help me out. I really do appreciate it

    I’m thinking wiring either got loose, broke or connectors got corroded somewhere but I just don’t know where to start looking

    Okay, trust but verify as we say in the business.

    So use a multi-meter to test Pin #1 & #3 on the CPS, should be 540 ohms +/- 10% for a good sensor. If you are not sure if the wiring is good, then pin it out from the DME. Google search this: bmw E-36 ETM That is the wiring diagrams for you car, and will help you out.
