Title says it all.
E36 M3 euro trans, e46 M3 or E46 ZHP trans, e39 540i.
Ok thanks, is there an “easy button” version where you just need to install it? LOL. I am being facetious.
In my searches I also find 6 spd’s listed as sequential, is that the SGM? BMW didn’t make another type from what I have read so far. I think you can get after market true sequential units for racing. Correct me if I’m wrong please.

E39 540i would have the bellhousing for the V8 block so I don’t think it would fit.
The Euro 6 cylinder diesels use a GS6-53 that fits but it has odd low ratios and was never sold in the US. The GS6-53 from gas engine 6 cylinders does not exactly bolt up.
The GS6-37 from a E46 330i, some E60 and E90 and E85 is probably the best choice.
Zionsville Autosport has a kit for installing an E46 330Ci 6-speed into an E36. Not cheap, but looks really good. Considering it myself.
There is no specialized part needed if you are going OEM, which is..if I understand correctly, what this thread implied?
E36 Euro Evo m3 (any M50B32 '96-99) came with either SMG type 1 Getrag 420G or 6spd variant of the same transmission. Both units are identical inside, difference being that the SMG unit doesn't have the bellhousing shift gate detents machined in and installed, but bellhousing are identical.
The first Generation Getrag 420G used in the Evo is different than the Getrag 420G used in the E46 as it has a complete different input shaft spine diameter size to accommodate the smaller E36 M clutch disc splines. The E46 M clutch disc splines are large and beefy, so is the input shaft from the 2nd generation Getrag. This doesn't matter as you would just use a E46 M clutch disc and w.e aftermarket or oem E46 M flywheel and pressure plate you find.
You can't use a 5 series e39 Getrag 420G either as that has a shorter input shaft so you need to swap that out with a E46 or original e36 input shaft. Also the E39 bellhousing is completely different and you need the original e36/e46 (which are the same between e36/e46).
I have an auto '99 328is e36 and did this swap Nov of '18 with an SMG E46 6spd, I converted it to manual and then my car auto to 6spd manual. It was extremely simple and cheap actually, I used any oem pilot bearing, Euro Evo transmission cross member from dealer (cheap! But from germany so 2 weeks order time) I put a good used e46 M full clutch setup, also you need the euro evo shifter support (also cheap and Germany) from dealer, and euro evo shift linkage rod. Or do what I did and buy a UUC euro evo short shift kit.
I have an extra new OEM black hardcoat anodized euro evo transmission cross member, and also brand new shift linkage rod and shifter support if anyone is interested. The shifting feel is the same with the UUC and the oem as it's very very short compared to stock 5spd setup...I learned this the long way by ordering the kit.
* The Getrag 420G in either SMG or manual case is not a cheap machine, $500-700 if lucky*
Also the N54-N55 E9X style transmission (also used in many others) does not fit our M5x blocks at all! ...it would be nice if it did.

In my opinion I would not put anything but the Getrag 420g in an e36 as a 6spd. This thing is more direct than a bolt action rifle, you absolutely cannot shift across gears, only directly up and down, no side to side movement whatsoever.
You'd need to feel one to believe it, maybe being low km smg also kept my transmission very fresh (never been grinded in gears).
