I have a new noise from my car. It can only be heard when applying throttle and when I let off the throttle in any gear. The closest thing I can equate it to would be metal tensioning up. I know it sounds strange but I am preparing to do a 1500 mile trip at the end of April so I need to be sure my clutch won't fail. From what I've read it doesn't sound like a pilot bearing or anything of the like. My guess would be a broken spring on the friction plate?? I may try to take a video in the near future but I feel that it is quiet enough my phone will not pick up the sound. TIA
Nothing about those symptoms sounds directly related to the clutch to me. Could be a lot of things, there are many more probable causes.
What would be your guess at what it is if it's not the clutch?
A diff can make a whining noise on acceleration and deceleration. The other thing to look at would be the driveshaft u-joints.
Be sure and check the fluid levels in the trans, and diff.

Here is a video link! You may have to turn it up to hear the noise but I did it enough that I think it is noticeable. https://youtu.be/2NA3CZHLwHQ
You can easily create the sound when driving. What if you park the car and rev it out of gear do you have the same noise?
Based on that get the car up in the air and check the drivetrain and differential.
I bit the bullet and took it to the dealer. I just didn't have the time to chase this down. They determined it was the diff carrier being rusted out. Good thing I'm getting a full M3 rear end in the near future!
