    Transmission fluid ZF 5HP 19

About to change the automatic tranny fluid on my 2002 530i with about 130k.

It' a ZF 5HP 19 green tag. ZF lifeguard 5 goes for about $19 a liter. Is there a cheaper fluid that's just as good ?

How much fluid will I need for a drain and refill with a filter change ?

Pentosion, IIRC atf1. I bought two 5qt. bottles. Was cheaper than buying the 7 or 8 quarts you'll need.

Yes, Pentosin ATF 1 is supposedly the same as the LifeGuard5/LT71141 original fill. Do your own verification on that.

Many people have used valvoline maxlife multi-vehicle ATF. The bottle typicall shows compliance with LT71141, but not certification.

Just checking prices and the ZF lifeGuard isn't that much more expensive than the Pentosin and Maxlife so I'll probably go with the ZF.

How fluid will I need, I'm thinking a little bit less than 5 liters ???

Take a look at my Google Drive folder with a ton of 5hp19 docs including how much fluid is held etc: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xd...cSC9Y3xozwoN1g

Yes, confirmed. "Pentosin ATF-1 Synthetic" is an LT71141 compatible, recommended by the tranny manufacturer.
Available in many online or brick car parts stores. It is best to buy it in 5-liters jugs. Shop around for the best price.

Thanks Alex .... According to your document the capacity for my ZF 5HP19 transmission is 6.2 liters without the torque converter.

I ordered 7 liters of the ZF LifeGuard fluid for $110. A new filter, gasket and pan bolts were a little over $50.

You won't get the full 6.2 liters in there, so don't try. Just make sure you follow the ZF fill procedure. It's somewhat a PITA but necessary.

Valvoline MaxLife is typically much cheaper than the Pentosin or LifeGuard products.
