Weird tranission issue

Hey guys,

I own a 2004 bmw e46 325xit and I’ve come across a problem. The transmission stays in park when you put it is reverse but it also goes into drive when you put it into neutral. I’ve looked at the shifter and everything the dashboard says what gear it’s going into just nothing else can’t figure it out and I can’t seem to get it to go into fevers or neutral. It’ll go into neutral when it’s off and you move the shifter to neutral and reverse but other than that it won’t work any ideas or help. The wife did leave the sun roof open when it rained about a week ago but there weren’t any problems when that happened. gcould it be a delayed problem or not likely. Also when I was leaving work the other day it was super cold and the car wasn’t warmed up at all and when I drove away it didn’t move right away and I pressed the gas early and it jolted the car hard could this cause my issue thinkin it could be the shift cable is wrong or somethin. need it fixed can’t drive without reverse or neutral forever.

It sounds like the shifter is having an issue

I thought so also but when I shift it with the car off and just the key in position 2 it’ll shift into reverse neutral drive park no problem it’s just when it’s running that it does this.
