I had an adventure with a failed vehicle inspection. The cam position sensor code came up. My garage installed a new one. The fault didn't clear. He installed another sensor. No joy, but suggested maybe the VANOS was tired after 20 years and 122K miles.
Vanos was replaced but fault remained. It was determined by second mechanic that the replaced sensor was not OEM. An OEM sensor was installed and the fault went away and the Roadster passed inspection. Beware none OEM sensors.
Non-OEM problems are common knowledge. But it would be interesting to know the brand of the first sensor, and that of the second sensor. Because they could both be the same.
There is an ongoing question among such threads here as to whether the quality of the same brand is better if bought through the BMW parts system with BMW stickers on the box.
