how much brake fluid is lost when replacing the brake line and caliper.

I believe I need to rebuild a rear caliper so I'm going to replace the original brake lines at the same time. If I don't remove the cap on brake reservoir, should I expect to loose a lot from the system? I understand I need to bleed the system after but I've never pulled off a caliper.

You'll likely introduce air into the system when you remove any of the lines, so you'll need to do a complete bleed.

If you're rebuilding one, you'd be better off rebuilding in pairs (both rears).

A full bleed is about 1.5 litres from what I've read.

Leaving the cap on won’t save anything.

    The cap is vented.
Get a small plug or tapered rubber cork to stick in the open line as soon as you disconnect the flex brake line from the hard line. That will minimize the loss and air getting in.
When's the last time you replaced all the brake fluid? If it's been 4 years or more then all of it should be replaced.
If your just interested in the volume for that one caliper and line it's about 4 ounces.
Make sure you use flare wrenches so you don't round the corners of the fittings!

Tip/Trick, push the brake pedal 1/2 way, wedge a piece of wood between the seat and the pedal to keep it there and presto, no fluid will leak out as you work. The alternative to to plug the hard line as your work, if nothing is done all the fluid will leak out as you work. Buy two qts of Brake Fluid Type 3/4. My personal choice is ValvolineDOT 3 and 4 Brake Fluid (32 oz.) https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/c3...rs-fluid/16113

Don't forget to clean and install DRY the caliper pins, apply caliper grease to all pad contact points, replace the pads, and replace the rotors (they are cheap!)

Search for the caliper and 6 hoses rebuild I wrote in forum using FTE seals/boots.

Get all 6 new hoses and do them all at the same time.

Clamp the old hose to prevent fluid loss.
Once the caliper is rebuilt, replace the hose.

Thank you all great advice. I had done all the brakes and rotors over the last 8 months but on quick inspection my right rear caliper ate one pad so I need the rebuild. I will rebuild backs, change hoses all around and flush the system.
