    Nav and Mexican border issues?

Now this is in all likelihood just a bizarre coincidence, but here goes.

Last year I was down in Southern Calif headed to San Diego near El Centro when the Nav froze up. In SD for several days it kind of started working, but not really until I was out of the area. Last week it had been working fine for 11.8 months when approaching San Diego it quit working. Little different, this time it would show the direction I was headed, but nothing else, no streets, directions etc. Mark III, the latest maps available, 2012 or something. Ones from an informal vendor here I think it was, not BMW. Other than these incidents it's worked well for 4 years now as long as I have the right map CD in.

Problems near the Mexican border? Just a coincidence? These cars can do strange things like when the radio killed my battery overnight twice, a month apart, so I'm not discounting much just because it doesn't seem to make sense.

That makes about as much sense as anything I can figure out.

You probably had 10 of them hiding in the trunk mess'en with the disc so you'd head north!

The educated answer is that the North American Navteq disc only covers US and Canada. Mexico is on a completely different disc.

The ignorant answer.... well plenty have been said here already.

How to stack 5... errr.... golf bags in the trunk
    Diehard E39 driver.
I'd rather die or take a walk before driving an E60 or any BMW made after Y2K.

That did occur to me, but it's got different behavior than when I go past a state line, and I'm still several miles inside the US. It's really odd.

On a side note, I'm glad to have provided today's comic relief.

Maybe asking a few locals in SD about the issue will shed some light. Someone there must have experienced the same thing.

When you say "different behavior".. like what?

re-read your original post. Might be worth checking out if a different GPS antenna works. Navigation freeze ups on the VDO/Dayton/BMW nav computers are horrible when the GPS antenna is malfunctioning or shorting out
