So I'm doing a tune up on my E30, and as I was taking out the spark plugs, I had no problem with the first 5. The last one (closest to the firewall) was a bit of a pain to get out. When I finally manage to pry it out (using some WD40) it was stuck to the socket pretty good. I then took it out of the socket, and noticed this rubber piece on it which no other one had. So my question is what the heck is this, and should I put it back on the new spark plug before installing? Thanks for the help!

Here's a picture of the socket hole.

spark plug sockets have a rubber thing inside to hold the plug and stop it falling out if thats what youre asking
BMW E30 325is M20B33 in the making....... ITB's, roller rockers and stroked to the hilt
that's what that is, the spark plug socket boot that goes inside the socket
No e30s again.
Ok, how come it was only on the 6th spark plug and not the others? I installed the new spark plug without that rubber part, you're saying there's a danger the spark plug can fall inside the engine without it? Also, the wires all seemed to tighten fine, aside from spark plug #1's wire, which is quite loose. Maybe I should fit that rubber part on to the first spark plug instead?

I had the same thing when i changed my plugs on the weekend.
only cyl #6 closest to the firewall had a rubber spacer.
No idea why that and only that plug has a spacer.
both of those rubber things came off with that plug? I know the small one goes in the spark plug socket to hold the plug from falling out when you are trying to install it. if that other larger rubber thing also came out, I have no idea what it is but it seems like it would melt if you left it on the spark plug for long
No e30s again.
Yes, Cylinder #6 was the only one with the rubber spacer! It was also the hardest one to see, so when I was taking it out I was wondering what was so difficult in getting that one pried out. Then it was stuck pretty good in my 13/16 spark plug socket. Had to use some WD40 and pliers to to get it out.
Superj, yes, both those rubber things came off with the plug. The rubber was actually in pretty good shape overall. Car has 128,707 KM (80k miles), but the ODO is stuck. When I took out the old cap, rotor and distributor, they looked like the original units. The fact that Tzantushka also had the same thing on his makes me feel this may be a factory part?

maybe. I have never seen them on a car but its possible
No e30s again.
There is nothing like that on RealOEM. Going out on a limb here, but perhaps that extra rubber piece, maybe for both of you, is from another spark plug socket in the past, where the rubber insert from the socket stuck onto the plug unbeknownst to the wrencher.

Well if it were a BMW part, there should be a PN embossed on it.
