    Engine Removal Hang up

Hey guys so I bought a new zhp motor I almost have the old engine out but the exhaust flange keeps getting hung up on the control arm and the oil pan gets stuck on the steering shaft. any tips on which way to shift the engine/car to get it out? right now the entire front end is off and the car is jacked up on stands behind the front wheels

I’ve never swapped an engine but 2 bits of info:
    - BMW raises the engine+transmission from underneath at the factory
    - I believe the only way to get the engine out is to disassemble everything in from of the engine, support the engine+transmission and push the car back away from the engine or move the engine+transmission forward away from the car.

You need to disconnect the steering shaft from the steering gearbox and move it aside.

The exhaust can be maneuvered around the control arm and everything else.

Are you absolutely positive you have to remove the steering shaft? I've gotten the pan past but then the engine hits the firewall

Thats what I did. Remove the single torx bolt from the steering gear end, pull the shaft off and move it aside. Takes a few minutes and makes removal and installation much easier.

Done several engine pulls and swaps.. you do need to disconnect the steering shaft as stated above, then it will come right out.

I actually managed to get it out without removing the steering shaft. I ended up just jacking the engine up a bit more untill it cleared the shaft and the control arm. However, make sure you have someone doing this with you because once you clear the shaft it kind of falls back down a little bit so you need a spare set of hands to guide it.

I would disconnect the steering and drop the front end as well or disconnect the struts and bushings and pull the front end out with the engine.
