Hi, my water pump went out on my 2001 740il. It has been down for a few weeks now. Mostly because I can only work on it on the weekend. The past 2 weekends I have found something each time that needs to be replaced. That means ordering a part and waiting for the following weekend to put it on. I thought this was going to be the weekend to get it fixed. However the one thing standing in my way is I have lost the little metal retaining clip the goes on the water hose the connects to the alternator. I have seen some on eBay, but don’t know what size to order. Does anyone low the size or part number? Realoem doesn’t show it. Or If they do I can’t find it. Thanks. I am also open to another way of fixing this, if someone knows how, or what can be used instead. Thanks!

It looks like it is about 24mm. I couldn’t find a clip so I had to purchase the entire hose.

I know it is not normally sold separately, but some are on eBay. Just didn’t know for sure what I needed. Also sometimes some of these parts can be had aftermarket because the same size is used on a ton of different cars. I got tired of trying to track it down. I figured this time I would just replace the hose.

You sure it’s not the cam position sensor? Hard to tell because it’s horribly disgusting! How embarassing lol!
I wondered if it was the cam position sensor. Hard to tell what it is with all the grease and grime covering it. I don’t appear to have a coolant leak any more after replacing the water pump, and the hoses the o-rings fell out of. Car was running rough when it started last night and gave a transmission fail safe and engine fail safe error. It was running fine when I parked it to replace the water pump. I thought some of the insulation from those wires must have fallen off and they were now making contact.

Ok so it was definitely the cam sensor.
Sorry I don’t even know why I asked before tracing it down. This car has me all flustered. It has been down over a month now, and it seems to be one thing after another to get it running again. It started with the water pump. Something I replaced on my other 740 3 times. Enough that it should have been and easy 2 hour job. One month later the car is still not running.

Sorry bro for the wrong info. I have always associated it to the Vanos parts. That seal Around the outside of mine was leaking and I recently changed it solved my oily issue in that area.

No apologies needed! It is really a mess under there right now. I have a growing list of things that I need to do to the car, and not enough time to do them. I know I need to replace my manifold intake gaskets, valve cover and probably upper timing chain cover gaskets. I am sure the lower ones need to be done too, but only so much I can spend on this car right now. I have way too much going on right now and just need to get the car running. Seems like I work on it for 15 mins then find something I have to order. Then it is the following weekend before I can work on it again.

Just for piece of mind. The upper TC cover gaskets are shit and should be replaced because they are rubber like the valve covers. The lowers are metal and should not degrade or leak. Don't touch them unless you are doing guides.

Those rubber gaskets turn to hard brittle plastic with time. Crazy what the heat does to them.
I think we all feel this way at some point. Had mine on tow truck 2 days ago for the transmission selector switch. Simple fix but not to be performed in my employers parking lot. Hang in there these cars are wonderful once sorted out.
