So, I've recently been searching for a classic 02 that I could eventually buy..
And in the mist of all the car browsing I've come across this ad that said it was a restored 2002 and getting into the 3rd pic I see this (the one above) ... well, I'm by far no expert but I am a bit of an enthusiastic fan and this seems like some sort of abomination. I've never seen any 02 with two sets of taillights, just the ol' two roundies or squares, still I like to learn and find new, rare and interesting things. And this seems so odd to me that I was left a bit dumbfounded.
Without any more rambling, could anyone let me know if this is legit oem or just a horrible mod?
Thank you.
A 2002 was my first BMW in 1975, so I know this model quite well, it was a early model which still has 2 round taillights in total, never 4 like in your picture. In 1973/4 = 1974 model year came the change to the square taillights.

If I remember right, till summer 1973 all BMW 02 were equipped with chrome grills in the front and round taillights, after the works holidays in the BMW factory from August 1973 the front grills were made of plastic and the taillights were square (except the touring)

It looks cool and well done if it is a mod..
The metal around the lights all look formed/pressed the same like the lights sit in an indent so that looks OEM..
I'd look at the wiring and see if that looks OEM but you probably can't..
Interesting..

It’s NOT original - from BMW or Alpina. It’s a very unusual custom mod, well done as well. Similar to how some folks altered 02s to fit quad headlights. Does this car have that mod as well (to match)?
It might be rare, if it’s a real Alpina model — even with the quad round taillights. But I suspect not, as the rear bumper is from a later square tail light 02.

I unfortunately also changed on my car then from the round taillights to the square ones, well, it was fashion then to have the "new" look and we were young. Then the other usual mods like double Weber carbs, ti, tii wheels etc ppSimilar to how some folks altered 02s to fit quad headlights

I'm pretty certain this was a restored 2002 in which the owner got a little creative.
