While driving the transmission gear came (gear with exclamation), I pulled over and parked at a parking lot. I turned of the engine and tried to start it back, this when the problem started. I noticed on the gear shifter all light are ok. I can move the lever from P to N, D and M no problem all lights light up, but the Dash board does not change it just stay in in "S" - The only time it changes is when I go down to Manual, it shift to M1.
So far these are thing what I have tried.
1. Disconnect battery - even waited for over 24 hours.
2. Tranny reset - pressing gas pedal for 30 seconds.
3. Check tranny fluid - all good here.
4. Disconnect and reconnect the electric connector next the tranny.
Don't know what else to do here - please help....
There should be codes(s) for transmission stored in the memory - find a shop that has the right diagnostic equipment for BMW and have them read transmission codes. Exclamation mark with the gearcog is not a good sign.
The gear ! Sign disappeared after I shut off the engine. I was expecting for that to stay. I do have BMw code scanner no trouble codes found..
Could it be the valve body?
What kind of scanner are you using, as some cannot read transmission codes.

Yeah, may be you are right.......I have the cheap BMW scanner I bought 4 years ago at amazon. I have the Creator C310 model, helped me few times to diagnose service engine light.
Yeah, if you are on a budget and have other cars, a Foxwell would be a good choice. If not, and you only have older BMW's <YM2008, it would be worth looking at getting INPA. INPA is BMW's diagnostic program, and with a laptop plus a 30 dollar cable, you can talk to all the modules on that car.

Thank you for the advise. I see amazon sells the CD and cable together for under $30.00 worth the investment.
