Obd1 car, it will crank fine but no spark or fuel. I was driving and the engie just shit off and never started again.
I pulled the crank position sensor and the pins in the plug were corroded so I cleaned them.
now I'm getting roughly the same ohm load across ALL 3 pins when I swap from two pins to 2 other pins. from what I understand I should only be able to get an ohm reading across 2 of the pins, not all 3.
right now I'm looking at replacing the sensor but wanted a second opinion
thank you!
With that car, it is only Pin 1 & 3, a multi-meter set to Ohms and you should get 540 plus or minus 10% IIRC.
If you are getting the same reading for every pin, they yeah I am willing to say it is bad and needs to be replaced, as the CPS provides the timing data to the ECU.
I would also check the cam position sensor too.

ok thank you Dworthy, that's what I thought, but wanted confirmation
Also as a side note, do not just buy any ole sensor, for they tend to fail quickly. Best to purchase Bosch, Hella, or Siemens branded sensor, that way you will get a long service life out of it.

If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
dworthy I replaced the crank sensor and she fired right up! yeah I know about the cheap sensors lol... I bought a duralast from Autozone (they are just down the road, had it in stock and I need the car running yesterday)
so now that it's running I'll go ahead and order a good OEM one and have it on hand!
So to add to the whole story, I was fighting to get my car in tune for the last week or so (hx35 turbo, 18psi max, ARP head studs, .140" cut ring head gasket)
After checking the fuel pressure it was wandering from below 40 psi to above 60 psi so I changed the fuel pressure regulator and it fell right inline for fuel.
The car ran great for two days so I figured it was ready to daily and I pulled my "daily driver" 97 4runner into the garage and cut all the front suspension out to do a strait axle swap.... Well come Monday morning and time to head back to work is when my BMW died leaving me without a daily and just my motorcycle to ride in 30° weather lol

honestly I figured while I had the hood open I'd check both and the cam sensor test out good.
I left it plugged in, probing the sensor wire while checking voltage and moving a wrench up to and away from the tip causing it to go from 5ish volts down to almost 0 volts
The reason for checking the cam sensor, if the data is thrown out too much, it will shut the engine down, for the DME thinks it is out of time. While it typically doesn't cause any problems, it is always best to check.

Had a quick question, involving headgaskets.
A while ago i put new oil and new coolant in my 325i (m50b25) and took it around the block and ran it for it bit to get everything situated. Came back to an Oil Cap milky. This also happened before the oil change and coolant change. No smoke out the tailpipe. No Oil in coolant, Temp. Gauge reads fine, but the block is really hot. Is this a Head Gasket or Cracked Head or just a leaking line somewhere?
