I'm potentially buying an 03 X5 with an "engine knock". The shop that has it doesn't seem to have diagnosed it. From my research, it looks like they have same issues as the 4.4 with the guides? Or is their issue the valve stem seals?
I'm going to look at it tomorrow evening and want to do some research on the different noises that this specific engine makes and possible causes. I want to see if it is worth picking up to repair or if it just needs an engine or head
I've done a bunch of the 4.4 guides, so I'm pretty familiar with that noise.
if the valve stem seals were bad i image it would be smoking a lot but i'm pretty sure the N62 has that problem more commonly. the timing chain tensioner could have went bad
M62 doesn't have valve stem seal issues. And if it did, it wouldn't cause a knock.
You better be prepared to replace the engine if you buy the car. Not saying you will absolutely have to, but if it's a rod knock, you will.
