Battery learning curve, now heated seats inoperable. 2009 X3.

So, I've been having some fun lately

    2009 BMW X3 (? E83 ?)

Changed out the original BMW battery for a NAPA AGM battery a year ago. Battery did fine for (?)5 months, then would not charge fully, then would charge less, then less, until it didn't have enough power to turn the engine. Replaced with another AGM battery. Same problem after a couple months. Took to 2 non-BMW specialist mechanics. Head scratching.

Around this time I started charging the battery with a regular battery charger. Worked OK, but battery lost charge quite quickly (2 to 4 days). After a month of this, the front seat-heaters stopped working. Push the button, green lights blink on for 1/2 second, then nothing.

Took to BMW dealership and learned about the need to register a new battery, especially as it is AGM (not FLA like the car came equipped with). Technician registered the battery, said it should now charge as expected from the alternator. Hopefully so.

My question is about the heated seats. They still do not operate.

Any suggestions? Can some computer-ish component be reset or some such, now that the battery is registered in the onboard computer?

    Many thanks!

If the green LED illuminates then shuts off...my first guess would be that something happened to the heated seat mat's wiring so it shuts down instead of causing some electrical issue.

Question to you...do you or have you or anyone else kneeled in the seat (like in putting concentrated weight in one point)? Unfortunately, this can create a break in the heating mat which can cause the issue you describe. Click the following link for a good operational explanation of the heated seats from the BMW TIS...take note of the section under FAULT MONITORING:

Another thought...have you checked the fuse(s) for the heated seats to see if one blew when you were charging the battery? Check your fuse index for the location of the fuses that power the heated seats.

THanks for the thought Qsilver7. In this case it wouldn't be that (I think). Both seats had been heating fine, and then on one day both driver and passenger seats stopped heating, with the same problem. I don't think both would have had a broken wire silmultaneously. Also, no I didn't happen to kneel, etc. on either seat when this happened.
