    2001 e38 good battery but test 9 only shows 6-8 volts while running/driving

    tested ignition switch, 12.8v going into and out in position 1 and 2.

    there are a lot of IKE display issues and sometimes trans fail mode when the UB test 9 voltage falls below 7V but all is well when its above 7v, battery itself stays between 12.5 and 13.5V all the time (tested at cigarette lighter while driving)

    where does test 9 actually test for voltage? I know its not the battery as advertised!

    a fuse? usually they work or they don't and my display problems are intermittent....(when test 9 shows above 7V everything runs/looks fine!)

    I will check it though

    I checked fuse 18, as well as the other 2 labeled IKE fuses (23 and 46) and all were good, tested battery with car off at 12.5V at battery, restarted car to check anyway.

    display was blank initially then 5 mins later came up, displayed frozen in park whether in drive neutral or reverse. seatbelt indicator frozen on whether seatbelt in or not, dsc indicator frozen on whether selected on or not.

    brought up test 9 while running it showed 6.2 V running, tested battery 14.1 V running.

    again these IKE displays errors only occur when test 9 shows less than 7V

    The IKE measurement is very wrong - it should be close to the battery voltage. So, either the IKE fails to read the voltage correctly - or, and more likely, the terminal 15 voltage is actually low which would mean the IKE fails to operate correctly. The best place to start is at Fuse 18 - which needs to be checked with a multimeter - what is the voltage at the fuse with the ignition ON and what is the voltage that the IKE reports?

    It certainly could be - hence the voltage test at the fuse first....

    voltage at all terminals at the ignition switch is the same as the battery itself (above 12V) - I already tested that, I will go and check fuse 18 voltage though.

    does anyone know at exactly what component test 9 checks the voltage?

    I think I have answered this before for you in another thread - it measures the voltage at Terminal 15 - which comes from Fuse 18

    fuse 18 (plastic cover removed) matches battery voltage engine running or with ignition on and engine not running (14v and 12.5v respectively) test 9 showed 8.2 V steady the whole time

    since test 9 was above 7V all functions on IKE displayed correctly (shift position, DSC, seat belt and fuel low light)

    Have you tried a complete battery nap? When I've had problems with my IKE (pre and post M5 IKE retrofit) I found that a battery nap resolved it 100%. For 740 only: Disconnect your battery completely, then connect the positive and negative cables together (keeping the battery out completely) for 30 minutes or so. Then reconnect positive, followed by negative and see if the problem is now gone. If 750 you will need to disconnect both batteries completely and just let it sit overnight. Reconnect everything in the morning and check your results.

    Next plan would be to oik out the cluster far enough to get to the connectors - firstly check they have seated correctly - and then check the voltage on the GREEN/VIOLET wire which should be at the battery voltage - if it is, that really only leaves the cluster itself....

    Did the complete battery nap a couple times, no joy! I’ve pulled the cluster out and re-seated the connections with contact cleaner to no avail. I did not know which wire to check the voltage out so I will do that next

    tried a newer battery with a higher resting voltage (12.7v) and test 9 showed as high as 10V at times. But again when test 9 voltage dropped into the low 7v range the IKE display problems re-emerged with the shifter indication frozen , the DSC indication frozen and the seat belt indicator frozen. sometimes the whole MID diaplay will go blank completely and I suspect this is when the test 9 voltage is below 7v (can't be sure since I can't bring up test 9 in that case since it is MID display dependent)

    will pull IKE and test Voltage on GRN/VIO wire today or sunday

    There are no circuit diagrams for any of the modules in the public domain.....
