Wait! What? People look at my car? And here I am all this time driving it cause I like it. Who-da thunk it?!
My wife likes it and my daughter too, which is important because we own three of them
I think the others take no notice of it, no problem I don't care about it.
It was a beautiful day Saturday morning and I havent washed the 528 in a few weeks, so I thought Id run it down to the car wash and spray it off real quick.... Theres a big parking lot right off the car wash bays cause its a big Chevrolet dealer.... so I always towel dry the cars in that area. I was dressed in some shabby clothing and I guess I must have looked a porter or detail guy.... This middle adged gentleman comes walking towards me slowly and gets close enough to ask me "Is that your car or the dealers car"?? I said its mine... he stopped and said "Ohhh, ok" and turns away... stopped turned around and says "Nice car"... I said thank you. I continue drying the car I look up and there he is again this time in his Hundai Santa Fe thingy... Stops and says "Thats a pretty color" I said thanks again... and he drove off starring at the car...
My wife, my sister and my mom all love the 528... theyve liked all of my BMW's though... My wife has been driving a BMW since 2006.... until now, she drives a 17 Silverado which is best for her real estate en devours.... she still loves BMW's though.. Im very lucky that my wife is a "car girl"... Ive had allot of different cars through our 30 years together and shes always enthusiastic about the cars we have.

97 1... are you sure they're laughing at your car and not the guy behind the wheel?
Personally, I could care less what others think about my car. I don't own it or drive it for them or to show off. I own it (for 17 years, now) because I like it. Who cares what others think? I mean, c'mon, are we back in grade school?
I knew the thread title would deliver
I back this. I've only been driving bmw style cars for 3 to 4 years now. I'm only 20 years old now. The only time my family owned a bmw was either before I was born or one time my dad owned a e38 for 5 months for a quick flip. Bmw grew on me when I was 12 and in search of a good car brand that had touchs of luxury but motorsport heratage. bmw stood out. The car I fell in love with looking at and history was the E30 m3 and since then I've done crazy amounts of research. The first bmw i owned and traded on was my e39 528i 1998 build with face lift. The driving exspensive was totally different from any other car I had driving at the time.
Now I have a 540i with 260000 miles and counting... (daily car) people ask why I don't sell it and get something more *clears throat* "reliable" or something "better" or "newer" I simply respond with "there's no other car brand that fits my needs as well as this one. Besides anything made after the e46, I rather master the bmw brand rather then be jack of all trades with other car brands.
(I personally do not like the styling of the cars after the e46, especially the 7 series. The 1s are ok but that's about it.)
I can probably see myself 15 years from now with my same e39 540i but with all the work I want done to it, maybe even supercharged with top notch interior.
Why? Because it's perfect for me. I only wish it had modern features that new bmws have mostly the interior tec.
And not many people get that. Most people rather sell there car when a major problem occurs such as timing guides.
Me I just save up the money I would put on a down payment on a newer car and just put that into my car. So much more worth fixing my rwd 300 hp 4 door luxury sports sadan then trade in on a new Honda civic thats fwd, 4 cylinder, cramped slug machine that feels mushy steering when I drive it through hills.
I'm driving a car that was 60,000 dollars in 1999 vs driving let's say a Japanese or American car for half the price or alot lower from the same year.
Also the bmws, if your good at looking have depreciated to the around the same price as everything else from the same year.
Idk bmw is just my sweet spot for cars

I spun the tires for about 200 feet leaving a stoplight in the rain a while back; fishtailing, bouncing off the rev limiter, etc. The dude in the Tacoma behind me seemed to like it, if his big double-thumbs up is to be believed

Car people here love them but women tend to not care about cars much, unless they're new. Women love new cars no matter what car, even a new Camry is impressive for some reason. I was driving a new Camry for work for a while and my gf loved it.
My car gets attention from fellow enthusiasts - for example, just last week I had a note left on my windscreen asking if I wanted to sell my 530i. But it does not attract attention from anyone else in the way my old Mercedes did. When you drive a vintage Benz, especially one in great condition like mine was, even people who are not really into cars stop to compliment it or give you the thumbs up.
At least, that was my experience, and I'm not embarrassed to say that it ended up being a cool part of owning the car. The e39, not so much. (My wife thought the Benz was gorgeous and learned to spot all different types of them on the road. She just thinks my e39 is "nice.") To most people it's just an old(er) sedan.
The consolation is that what my e39 lacks in crowd recognition, it makes up for in driving thrills for me. Then again, the design isn't yet old enough to be vintage. Maybe in another 10-20 years that will change!

Have you ever ridden in the passenger seat of an e39? Not that great. One reviewer called the e39 a "driver-oriented car." As he continued I realized he was talking about the dashboard layout. All the items in the center are oriented to the driver.
My e39 has been lowered with firmer shocks. And the throttle response seems quicker (larger TB). It's a hard car to drive smoothly and I often don't. My wife has gotten used to it and doesn't complain. But I'm not the best passenger in it. There are far more comfortable cars to ride in.
Hard to drive smoothly, not comfortable to ride in, you must be doing it wrong....

My son absolutely hates the sport seats. I think they're fine, but on our last road trip together, he was very vocal about how uncomfortable they are.

I have to agree that the bmw seats are starting to show how dated they are. I hate long drives (hour or 2) my back hurts pretty good but that's also because I'm a proactive driver I never relax back in my seat unless I'm feeling like it.
Passanger seats in the car are a totally different feel in terms of space and orientation
But the stock seats I can say, suck in the long term comfortably department

I have memory comfort seats in my car (and have replaced the bottom foam in the drivers seat) and I haven't had any issues on road trips.
My biggest problem with E39 seats is how they aren't very nice to look at, not counting the M5 versions.
Sport seats suck. Get the comfort seats or a pair of M5 seats.

You guys are either sitting on worn the eff’d out seats, way too fat, or just plain out of your minds... I have no problems with any of the E39 seats. The grandpa seats are ok, the sport seats are just fine, the contours are excellent, the E38 sport contours are Effin awesome. Get your seats, bodies, and minds checked...

Lol, Ok, time to go on a diet, and stop blaming the sport seats for craps sakes...

Looking for an E39 belly pan , passenger front inner fender liner …
She has her reasons, and realistically they're valid. She drives a Corolla, and over 5 years, the only maintenance her car has needed is a new set of tires and regular oil changes. My car.. Well.. Let's just say we could have put a much much larger down payment on our house had I not gotten the 540 4 years ago. I still love the car, but it was a horrible financial choice. I'm just glad I have her around to keep me in check.
Oh, and her last car related message to me was "NO MORE F****** RIMS!" I'm still debating whether or not to sell my style 66's. I want to keep them for my fantasy e36 project, but who knows if that will ever happen. side rant: Why the hell do these kids keep destroying e36 coupes?! Sedans and verts for miles, and they gotta destroy the coupes.

God, you guys are making me love my wife more and more... As soon as she first saw the 99 528...first thing my wife said was "those wheels are too small" referring to the 16" Style 29's. YES!!! Hey honey, I found some 17" Style 5s... remember those on the 01 525 we had? her: "Yes, those were nice, you should get those" YESSS!!!
