    08/87 E32 735 4HP22 8-pin valve body overhaul

Shogun the well you’ve dug and filled is deep and full precious information. You once told me my E32 735i build date 2/87 was the oldest one registered with the forum. With your and a input I installed an interior upgrade from a 94 740i. I also installed the rear and front exterior assemblies, changed to 4.11 diff from a 3.64. A friend and I are in Assembly stage on the ZF 4hp22 8 pin transmission. We’ve been following the rebuild you did on the 7 pin 5 series trans. The main valve plate is part #025_134. We need diagram showing check ball/accumulator sizes, locations etc. how can we find it? We’ve searched for 3 weeks. Thanks

Contact ZF NA with all the details in the name tag on the side of the transmission, that means type, serial number and Stucklistennummer = parts list number, they can send you the parts list and the diagrams for that specific Stucklistennummer with drawings where the check balls are, which plate gasket number you need etc.
Maybe this is enough already http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Troubl...ch%20Guide.pdf
http://www.erikssonindustries.com/ is ZF authorized ZF distributor, if you order the parts there, they will probably also be able to send you this list, if you ask there.

Especially the correct gasket between the plates is important, there are according to my list and what I have on stock these ZF numbers for the 4HP22/24

    1043 328 080 4HP24

    1043 326 161 4HP22
    1043 326 162 4HP22
    1043 326 232 4HP22
    1043 326 253 4HP22

That 4HP22 was used over a wide range of BMW models from E30 to E32 http://parts-at.ru/wp-content/upload...22_ZF4HP24.pdf

you do not yet have enough posts, but you can upload your pics on a free upload server and posts the links then here, it will take some time till you see your post then, as a moderator has to manually approve your posts till you have 10 posts, that is the forum spam-o-matic.

Thought you may be interested to know: I contacted ZF in Lincolnshire IL. While they could supply the parts list and diagrams specific to my 4hp22 variant the parts desk guy was very insistent that I contact a ZF authorized distributor to get the documentation. By the way he only gave me two companies to contact. One of them happened to be the one you suggested. He rated Eriksson Industries very highly as the preferred Distributor! He also told me the serial number was on a black plate above the rear of the oil pan on the drivers side. The number starts with 104300—. I do not see this. I do have the the engraved main valve body plate # 025_134. Perhaps that would help determine which of your gaskets fit

the name tag is on the left side of the trans above the oil pan, see here the details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPJbZIeNEQo
or call Eriksson and then tell the E32 735 built month/year, wire loom pinout has 8 pins and what numbers you have and maybe they can then find out the correct number of the gasket, or if they are not sure, they can sell you 2 versions and you can then compare with the old gasket.
the numbers for 4HP22 valve body gasket I have here are
    1043 326 161 4HP22
    1043 326 162 4HP22
    1043 326 232 4HP22
    1043 326 253 4HP22

probably end no. 232 or 253

    In 2016 I posted this:
    4HP22:
    1043 326 161 M5 3.4 ZF 4HP22E 1984-88
    1043 326 162 (518, 520, 528, 530, 533,535, 633, 635, 735 up to 1985)
    1043 326 232 (535, 635 AEGS)
    1043 326 253 (525, 528, 535, 635, 735 from 1985)

    The 4hp22 dilemma

Sorry for the delay in responding. I’ve been back and forth with my contact at Eriksson who has been extremely helpful but we are hamstrung by this fact: the transmission in the car is not the original transmission. I was a lot younger in 2003 when I purchased the car and consequently did not discipline my driving or mindfully maintain the guts of this car. It went into limp mode and I found and purchased a replacement transmission which had been remanufactured by ZF. I tossed the original transmission (mistake)! Everything went just fine with better respect for my car and following you guys fervently over the years. I’ve touched everything from “stem to stern” the problem I have now is due to ZF DELETING THE TAGS YOU ARE REFERRING TO, which they replaced with a label proclaiming that the unit was remanufactured by ZF. This means they likely upgraded some of the internals such as the valve body. Therefore I’m relegated to mentioning the numbers stamped into the valve body main plate (a 6 digit#) to provide a source of reference. The dual spring in the accumulator that controls Reverse and in Drive impacts 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear is the last item needing replacement. We initially found a replacement for the outer spring which broke into four pieces. It was too thin and allowed the shift points to work while off the ground but when the car was lowered the shifts were very weak, not solid. Eriksson supplied two replacements which did not match. The original spring was about 3-1/4” long and very stiff. It’s amazing to be this close and be stymied by a $4 spring!

and which are the ZF numbers of the springs which do not match?
What p/n is the Eriksson expert recommending as next to try? He knows meanwhile better than us.
Compare that with theses lists of available accumular springs, there is always the ZF part number listed and to which valve body parts list they fit

I owe you guys an apology! I was wondering why I only had 8 post after Shoguns comment about pic posting restrictions. I’ve done a little research and now remember I initially joined as EugenesE32 back awhen I initially posted with pictures showing some of the work I did then. Sorry!

o.k., that we have all in one thread: EugeneE32 posted 10-22-2016: Wow this is an incredibly important thread. I have an early build date (2/87) 735i m30 US spec that I am eager to acquire a reader like this for. Upgraded to 94 740i interior. Replaced lsd 3.64 to non lsd 4.11 Replaced trans and driveshaft with Ziff authorized rebuilt units. Installed HID lighting NEW radiator, front and rear suspension systems. Discovered warped front rotors were causing 52 mph front shimmy! Next drivers door wiring harness repair/replace (when drivers door is open, can't operate sunroof. Also, the turn and hold key function to close windows/sunroof only closes windows.

and here your other thread https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...erior-question

Appreciate the additional input. Every bit is valuable. A ball joint separation crisis has diverted my focus momentarily on a Acura RL. But as an update, I have found and just received a complete valve body all sections separated and complete (springs and all). It looks good externally, and early next week we will open it to see what is inside! There is some variance in the channels of the main valve plate from my current unit, but I believe most of the components will be a match. I will try to upload an update next week. Hopefully my ability to upload photos will be reinstated.

The first spring from Eriksson is 0732-041-524 listed as SPRING 4HP24 VB F DAMPER
The second one from Eriksson is 0732-040-111 listed as SPRING 4HP22
im not really going to fault them. Their hands were tied due to ZF not putting some type of replacement coding to indicate what they updated in the remanufacturing process.
