Replacement of manual shift rubber boot seal

I have looked all over for this procedure (forums both here and elsewhere and youtube) and completely failed. Mine is ripped and i have a new one to install but cannot figure out how to remove the old one. Is it as simple as pulling on it from the top? Also, the new one came with a plastic ring around it (kinda looks like a pull ring.) How do i put this on? Sorry if this is answered elsewhere... but search fu is anything but.

    87 325i Manual.

    Thanks!

As I recall, you need to lower the tail of the transmission a bit in order to remove the old one and replace it. I did mine when I replaced the shifter bushings.
