Metal in the oil, rod knock and Kaboom! You just have to hope for the best based on my research. I have found a few that had new bearings put in and in less than 10k miles metal shows up in the oil.

I don't understand how that is happening to some of these engines? The S54 had rod bearing issues and the M5s. What's the deal? The tight tolerances?

They pushed the rod bearing design, lubrication, etc. to the limits. Hence the 10W-60 oil to somewhat help the issue. As a result, the bearing lifespan isn't indefinite, especially if they've been abused (run hard when cold, etc.)

I definitely will not go until the car is warm. If you put that much pressure on the engine it's not going to be a high mileage motor, a TF dragster gets on pass. I plan on adding a prelube system because most of the wear is at start up. Once the engine is running physics takes care of the rest. I have been reading some BMW hand outs and have discovered that there are five oil pumps on the engine.
1, pumps the oil from the rear sump to the front sump.
2, pumps the oil through the oil filter and cooler to the engine.
3, pumps high pressure oil to the vanos.
4&5, pump oil from the heads back to the sump when cornering heavy.
An oil pressure gauge is in the future as well. The main oil feed pump is variable displacement and in my mind needs to be watched.
