    Replacement Key - 2003 325i

My key fails to start my 2003 325i. The FOB still works at normal distances. I assume an internal chip failure since my wife's key still starts the car.

What are the key replacement option(s) that won't take the numbers off my credit card?

PM RocketSurgeon (AKA Dillon) better if you can email him for faster reponse. He's a key guru and fraction of the price from the stealers. I have used him couple of times.

The key has 2 separate electronic systems. One is for the remote lock/unlock system. That system is powered by the battery in the key. The other system is the anti-theft system. The key is given a random code by the car’s anti-theft system. That code is used for the next time that key starts the car. The code has to match what the anti-theft system thinks the key is supposed to have. If the code in the key and the code in the anti-theft system matchbthe car can start. Otherwise the car can’t be started.

The key and the anti-theft system can become unsynchronized. Go to E46Fanatics and search for the key syncing procedure. If that doesn’t work then you’ll need to get a key from a dealer. You’ll need to show an ID and the registration to the parts person. Some dealers charge less for a key than other dealers. Shop around.
