Looked at the archives, and a lot of people think the 225 is the max width tire for a non-M. I have the Style 42 BBSs that are 7.5 and 8.5" x 17. The car came with 9 year old original Michelin Pilot Sports on the front, and never liked that tread pattern as they are really bad for tramlining. The little car has good newer AS3s on the rear. I've found a good deal on 4 used AS3+ in 235/45/17s with 7/32 tread on them for $200. But the car is lowered with BavAuto springs and Bilstein Sports, and I don't want to have to worry about rubbing fender liners, etc. Thanks for any input, as if these will work, it's better than $180 each for two new ones.

You may run into issues with rubbing in the front if you didn't add additional negative camber up front with a camber kit. The rears should be fine.
I'm looking/planning on getting a 235/40/18 set up and that's what I've found out. I've lowered my 2.8 with h&r / koni Sports recently and the front clearance definitely seemed to need the camber (I put -3* on mine).
I have a pre facelift 1999 z3 1.9 with lowering springs and 225 45 17 did rub while turning full right or left. I had to buy another set with 215 45 17. Camber might solve this problem, i haven't tried it.

I run 235/45 Continental DW up front on my lowered Z3M (H&R Sport/Bilstein Sport). I was planning to run the same on my 2.8 this spring, also on style 42s. On a hard right handed bumpy corner, the M will rub ever so slightly, but not enough that I've ever cared.

I have style 22 E36 M3 wheels that are meant for 235/40r17 that I want to put on my car but I cant find a good summer tire option. The federal 595 rs-r reviews for that size look good but they say its fo an 8-9.5" wide wheel and the M3 wheels are 7.5" wide so im not sure if they'll work.
yes you can, it might rub though
