This one isn't my primary vehicle, so repairs should be easier to get done. Not sure what all I need to do. The only code I got from it is transmission output speed sensor. Wondering if I should look for a trans or start with that sensor and work from there. Also the shifter seems to have enough play to not want to switch positions. Wiggling it seems to help.
Thanks
Can you post up the exact code, the wording, and what device you used to get the DCT?
Mileage would help as well, thanks.

If wiggling it seems to help then the problem is likely one of the following:
- bad sensor
- bad chassis harness connector
- bad chassis harness wiring
If it’s the sensor replace with a sensor made by the company (likely Bosch, Siemens or VDO) that supplied the sensor to BMW. Aftermarket sensors are strictly verboten.
It was P0721. I'll have to check everything else when I'm home.
I have an obldlink lx and a jdiag jd-101. Pretty sure I only got the code from them and looked it up. I was looking around some for a BMW specific tool, but haven't found one I can afford right now.
The shifter getting stuck and the wiggling it possibly helping, I believe that's a separate problem. I could be wrong. First I'm going to try to clean it up under there, check the wiring and plugs. Then move on with deciding what to do. I just came here straight, because the people here have never pointed me the wrong yet.
Thanks again.
I took some pictures of the dash and under the car. I had to borrow a jack because mine won't fit under it. Apparently the h&r springs I saw drop it a bit.
I cant seem to post pictures from my phone or the pc. could it be a resolution issue or something?I havent really posted pictures much. but its a ZF 5HP-19. the 2 plugs i see look ok from what I can see, they're dirty. it shows a gear next to the gear indicator on the dash. its almost to 212k. it loos to me like theres trans fluid or something lightly coating half the area and if it doesnt leak oil, it did. I didnt do much of anything except look and take th epictures i cant use.

I do think there is a size limit on the pictures, as I have never really uploaded anything about a 3MB picture.
Try and clean out each plug with a contact cleaner, as the oil could have made it's way into the plug(s).
Also most handheld scanners cannot read all the TCU codes.

I was thinking about getting a foxwell nt510. It's supposed to be able to read and clear and, trans a bunch of stuff.
Yes, that is a good piece of equipment for all you will need. It will read all the modules on your car and even be able to do some basic stuff, not bad for the price IMO.

I'll have to talk to my wife about it, will I need the round adapter? I've heard some E46s have them. I haven't noticed one.
No, all you need is the under dash obd2 port. My old 2001 330Ci didn’t have the round port. Your car is a year newer so it won’t have the round port, either.
I've only driven a small amount because of the issues. When you first start moving, you have to be real gentle with the throttle. It feels almost as if you received it and then drop it into gear if you're not careful. I haven't driven an auto in years. But most of them I've driven that slip seem more like you're really slowly letting out the clutch, not just stepping off it. Half wondering if a rebuild is in my future.
Hi Chris,
Step one for me would be read the codes with a good BMW diag device.
Step 2 would be doing a transmission service (fluid and filter).
Sure, the service may be a complete waste of money, and you may need a new transmission. But if the trans has been leaking, as you suggest, then stopping the leak, filling it with clean fluid, and changing the filter might just fix it. That's where I'd start, anyway.

The previous owner did. We talked about it and you can tell it's new fluid. Nice and clean. Chris, what do you think of the canner I mentioned above. And om kind of on the fence with replacement. I'd rather rebuild than replace with a used one. Not knowing how long it'll last. But I also have no experience rebuilding transmissions. I've taken apart and assembled a few, but for educational purposes.
From all I know, the Foxwell tool is excellent, as a simple to operate, handheld device. https://www.ebay.com/i/153213573803?ul_noapp=true
You can also get an INPA set up, if you have a laptop and are fairly capable with computers. Abel (328 Power04) has a thread on the Z3 forum with a complete description; it will be much less expensive, but requires computer skills.
It's worth noting that on some occasions, transmission fluid can leak into the round electrical connector, disrupting the signals. This is immensely common on Mercedes cars of this era: in fact, on the Benz, the fluid is often pumped all the way up the sheathed wiring, to the transmission computer, where it ruins the module ! I have seen this a couple of times on BMW's too.

The connectors are in kind of a tight space? I'm wondering what the easiest way is to get at them. I'm not sure I can unplug/clean them as it sits.
Also, I do not have a laptop. I have been looking for a cheap one, but no luck yet.

I can't visualize your trans, or tell you whether it's susceptible to the leakage into the electrical plug, without seeing it, sorry. I work on so many different BMWs, it gets a little fuzzy, especially Sunday afternoon after a couple of beers.

ok, so the foxwell came today. I went through lists until i saw a trans option that had 5hp in it. i got a short list....72: EGS steptronic switch, 31 EGS: sympton, gear monitoring, 13 EGS: Solenoid, Shiftlock (P0700, P1761) and 3B: Stall Speed (P0720). Not sure what these point towards, but that I try try to ask nicely for your help and give the information you request.
Thanks again everyone.
Also, I assume if we decide to buy a used trans that it should be the same, a zf5hp19.
Also wondering if after I get my seat, should I clear everything and drive it to see what comes back.

Yes, that is the typical thing to do. As you see, I don't deal with autoboxes very much as the Europeans (80%) prefer manual transmissions.
Just as a side note, it might just be worth rebuilding the throttle body first and if that doesn't help, you can always install it into the used transmission. Again, just spit balling here, for you may have worn clutches too.

And d, do you mean the valve body? Or is there also a throttle body for the trans?
Yes, sometime "auto correct" takes over!

Also, if I can get decent deal on a GM trans....would it be that hard to switch from the zf to gm?
Ive been looking half the day and I cant seem to find a picture that shows exactly where to apply power to the seat connector to be able to move it. Does anyone know where I could find such a thing?
I wouldn't want to swap between the 2 transmission, as I think the whole wiring harness, TCU is different. Plus you may have coding issues while attempting to bring the new TCU online.
Do you have a copy of the wiring diagrams for that car? There are plenty out there free of charge on the internet.
