There didn’t appear to be any type of sealant on this when I pulled it apart but I don’t know if I should use some or not. What do you do?
There would have to be something use rtv
I use any quality (3M, permatex) non-hardening oil-resistant sealant that I have handy. I kinda like the brush-on stuff cause I can get a thinner application. Currently, I have a can of Permatex Aviation form-a-gasket #3, brush on!
I also like permatext motoseal #1, it seams to peal off pretty easily at disassembly. I think this is what's currently on my diff cover.
no gasket...JUST RTV.
I have done my diff gasket TWICE now on the racecar (rtv only) and still moist/wet along the sides and bottom. Would output seals/flanges on the diff cause seepage while sitting?
I've grown to become a fan of the Permatex Anerobic sealer on rigid flat surfaces like water pumps, diff covers and oil pans.
As long as the mating surfaces dont have deviations of over 015-020 its great, no squeeze out like RTV.

I use the Permatex in the green tube specifically made for gear oil. No gasket. Works perfectly.

Permatex "The Right Stuff" on my diff cover without a gasket. Has been holding great going on 3 years now.
