Hello all. I bought this car with a bad transmission. I had the tranny replaced with a used one and come to find out you have to program computer after replacement. We took the old mechatronic assembly that houses the EGS module and put it in the used transmission that was recently installed because from what I learned the EGS module cannot be programmed if it came from another vehicle. It's VIN specific to each vehicle. Here is the bad news, after paying a technician 700 to switch the mechatronic assembly over, he is saying he cannot communicate with module period. My question to him was if the module is bad, how is it that I had some CURRENT transmission specific codes? (3-4, 4-5 ratio monitoring gear shift, and a turbine speed sensor code). I pulled these codes when I first bought the vehicle. He couldn't answer that question. He's been working on BMW for 20+ years and appears to be knowledgeable, however, if transmission specific codes are present, that tells me the EGS module was recognizing those faults and storing those codes. Am I missing something here? I look forward to hearing your feedback on this.
It was my understanding that the newer style transmissions were vin specific, not your year. There is a tsb about this
