Considering a low km 2008 650i but never owned one

    Hi Guys

First time in this forum but a serial BMW owner and I am considering a 2008 650i (2/2008) with 81K km on the clock and FSH with main dealer. I am looking for a daily driver as the 750il is 22 years old and I dont want to rack up too many more kms on it. I have tended to avoid the newer models as they have become more and more complex but the 650i is a nice bit of kit and pretty well optioned so I would appreciate any words of wisdom and perhaps some inside knowledge from those who drive them daily. 90% of the driving will be long distance open road.

    Thanks

Not sure what you mean by FSH? But if the car drives well, has no codes, I would say go for it.
Plenty of power, not too bad on mpg, and fun to drive!!!!

The 650i is great fun, oodles of power, a darn sight quicker than the E38, uses less petrol and handles like a sports car - but it is very efficient if you know what I mean. Compared to the E31/E32/E38 it has much less character, and the loss of the individual controls which are replaced by the idrive loses the aircraft-cabin feel.

But, it is a darn sight more reliable than the older, big BMW's that always like to surprise the driver on irregular occasions - just watch out for poor gear changes (ATF needs to be changed regularly and the mechatronic seals), smoke at idle (valve guide seal failure), coolant loss (transfer pipe leakage). You don't mention if it is an E63 or E64 - the convertibles are great fun and slightly quicker than the coupe due to the shorter diff ratio - although they are a little heavier,

Hi Timm I was checking out your informative pages on the E63. Its an E63 with the sunroof option black on black and a nice well look after garaged car. To be honest my 330ci E46 put me off BMW convertibles as it developed all sorts of weird roof problems and along with our bloody hot summers it would spend most of its life closed (but they are a gorgeous looking car)
I was planning to take the car to a specialist BMW shop for a comprehensive PPI and whilst its $312 it would at least show any looming problems but the car has a nice bark when it starts and idles (perhaps a different exhaust) has no rattles or vanos noises nor does it smoke. I was wondering if the long service intervals help contribute to the valve stem problem but I would do my own oil services at around 10k km
