i have on my '91 850i a problem with the ignition switch. All worked well if i always pull the key out ( hear a click ) and insert again for starting . With the key in it's difficult/not possible to start a second time.
I mounted a new ignition switch but the problem seems not solved. It's a bit better , but turning it a second time sure feels some resistance.
OK when pulling the key , click ,and restart as before….
any idea of the problem ? must be further in the steering column ??
thanks for replys !
Probably time for a new tumbler - here's how to do it:

When's the last time you lubricated the cylinder?
Timm, i meant the tumbler … the part with the key i changed new. Sorry , for you guys the "ignition switch" is the electrical part at the bottom ?

Jef, when it became "stiff" to rotate , i used graphite powder in the key hole but it didn't work. Only a good shot of WD40 made it working again.
Sometimes it was stuck , and again WD40 made it loose.
Only when i hear the loud "click" pulling out the key it was/is ready for another start.
i demounted the new tumbler , got some WD40 and light machine oil on the part under it , mount the tumbler to see now that it rotates but not the last part "starting" .
Again the new tumbler out , and i find the plastic pin isn't working anymore with a spring. I can't image i did something wrong. So again to the dealer.....
Mounted my old tumbler and will see if it gets any better…. first time with the new one was in fact the same resistance , so it must come from under the tumbler , the lock or ignition switch.... ?
Meanwhile i'm a expert in getting the tumbler out & in ( Ok, with a BMW ST )
