    DSC light, only

DSC light came on recently, mid drive, nothing strange going on. Several weeks ago and the ABS light has not come on as it often appears to. Coded as best I can, which isn't much and came up with "Error steering angle Control unit" Is this likely to be a control unit issue? Or is something else not happy and it reports as the control unit? If it is the control unit, where is it and what's the compatibility? I've taken a spin thru Realoem and while it's probably there, I'm not seeing it. I did try clearing it, several times, to no avail.

The steering angle sensor control unit is part of the sensor.
No.9 - its pretty horrible to replace and needs to be coded to the car.

Uggg. Great. On the coding, is it to the car, or might I have a chance of not needing it to be coded if it was from another 525 auto? I probably have the tools (software) to do it, but I haven't had much luck in getting it to run.

    To the car.
You may be lucky and not need to do it, but you will have to set the steering angle at the very least.

Oh boy. What program do I need to get working to do that? I've got an assortment that came with PA soft but so far only one seems to load and communicate.

You can do it with PA Soft but it’s pretty involved.

Otherwise NCS Expert to code and INPA to reset steering angle.

I have both of those in the software suite, but so far haven't gotten them to work. Looks like I need to spend more time in the software forum.

It can be really difficult to set up.
As long as you have a good cable, “Mike’s Easy Tools” is really, really easy to install and get working.

If you have the right INPA cable (K+DCAN), you can use this link to install INPA software
    “Mike’s Easy Tools”.https://www.4shared.com/zip/VWi1bzg2ee/EasyBMWTools_Mikes_.html

On the E39, I do not think you need to code or register the new steering angle sensor. But you have to calibrate it.
    With INPA installed, use Tool32.
First load and start Tool32, then open the group file DSC57.PRG (this is the group file for the E39's DSC), Scroll down the jobs list and double click "test_lenkwinkel". Done.

BTW, this Tool32 procedure also clears and turns off those pesky trifecta DSC/ABS/Brakes yellow lights.

Yep. +1 to Mikes Easy. That or the Bimmergeeks downloads.

Just be sure the cable is set to the right COM port (COM1 is easiest as its what most installs default to), and, "latency is set to 1". That's the most PITA bit of it.

Re: sensor, also listed as the "LWS" IIRC. (from Ched's note Im guessing it must be lenkwinkelsensor or something) I don't think you have to use Tool32 to do the calib (highly recommend staying away from Tool32 if possible...) I think you can do it in INPA too?

DSC light is triggered by low brake fluid just before the warning for low fluid comes on.

Yes, you can do it in INPA -I forgot which screen-.
However, with "test_lenkwinkel" on Tool32, you reset all the errors and lights, recalibrate and test the function of the steering angle sensor, all in a single shot. And so, that is my preferred method.

Cool - actually sounds worth the Tool32 ! Will give it a try next time. Thanks for tip Chedster.

I'm having exactly the same issue, having trying the calibrate using INPA many things. So I've just come across the comments above and also this, so it seems we are in the right lines. I will try it tomorrow.
