I have searched this issue but have not found any others with this same problem. I have noticed when I am driving about 45mph and take my foot off the gas, often the airbag light will go on for a few seconds. Then it will go off, usually because I am braking or accelerating again. It seems the car is sensing a change in momentum when taking the foot off the gas and for some reason it is turning on the airbag light. Does anyone know what this could mean or if it could be an issue? Thanks.
as your car is a 1997 built year, the cheap chinese made B800 BMW Airbag Scanner Reset-Tool for abt. $20 sold in the net will work on your car. Get one. The B800 diagnostic scanner for BMW's will allow you to read airbag trouble codes on BMW's between 1994 and 2003. This is a very easy to use tool that comes with instruction manual to help you diagnose problems.

I have also the Peake since years and the B800 I bought too some years ago to compare, as I found it for less than $20, as long as the car is built >1994, both tools work on my 1998 E36 M3.
Read about some quality complains of the B800, but my one works w/o any problem. Before 1994 bult year none works.
BTW: Peake Research closed down I just read on their website: "Thank you for visiting our website. Unfortunatley, Peake Research Corporation is no longer producing products. To those who enjoyed our products over the last 30 years, we can't thank you enough!"

well, basically such a tool for abt. only $20 is a good investment, you will for sure also need it in future, but then you have to start searching for the fault, here some links

.....SRS light stays on 2-5 minutes: If you look at service bulletin 720496 you'll see it. It's caused by a broken or damaged circuit board in either the drivers side seat belt latch or the passengers side. If you have code 24 its the drivers side if you have fault code 25 its the passenger side, either way it goes into the default mode which is to trigger both bags in the event of an accident. IF the system is functioning normally then the seat belt sensors detect if you have a passenger in the car and will turn that bag on or off which would save some money if nobodies on that side then you don't need to trigger the passenger bag. It affects all models with the ZAE airbag system, E34, E36, E38, E31 as of production date 3/94
new updated one from 1997: SUBJECT Seat Belt Buckle Switch, SRS Fault Codes 16/17 or 24/25 MODEL 3 Series (E36), 5 Series (E39), 7 Series (E38) produced up to 09/97 (E31 not mentioned) http://www.netropy.com/stuff/SI-720496.PDF
