E21 steering wheel options - that have worked for you

I know about the e21 sport wheel. Any other wheels swap in?

    Like this?

Definitely know it needs to be coarse thread.
However I've heard in other model boards that swapping the shaft is an option. (I'd rather just buy a wheel).

Momo as well you’ll just need to get hub adapter and you’ll be fine. IMG_2020.jpg

Plenty of options. I ran a early mtech 1 for a while. The sport wheel just looks so darn good even compared to that. I’ve strayed from the metal ones because the idea of one of those in an accident sounds downright deadly

I picked up a sport wheel at the yard for $10 but it is in very tough looking shape, and the horn button is missing. Probably should have the leather cover replaced but that would cost more than it would be worth in the end.

There's lots of info in other threads and other forums. Like this:

    Coarse spline-36, fine spline-54.

Pre-9/85 is coarse spline. Post 9/85 is fine spline.

Be careful which M-Tech wheel you get, they come in both coarse and fine :

The reason for the worry is that the early e28 (till 1985) had a coarse spline. It's easy to tell when in the car because the steering column housing changed from metal to plastic with the move to fine splines. But the steering wheels LOOKED the same, so those M tech and 3-spoke wheels can be sneaky, and an e28 steering wheel could be one or the other.

Here's pictures in this thread including easy ways to tell the difference:

This seems to be fine spline and coarse M-Tech wheels. Easy to tell the difference.

Thanks! Really clears it up for me. I'd been researching but didn't catch the recess vs. older version. Many wheel photos don't show the splines well enough.

The wheel from the M535i and M1 bolts in but blocks the dash lights and the top of the gauges from view.
