There was a service bulletin about a cold-start squeal on E90 diesel from the A/C belt. I looked up the bulletin, but it doesn't apply to E70 diesels. But maybe it's the same issue, I can't say for certain. I copied a portion of it below. And as far as you're smelling diesel exhaust, the only way is if there's a leak in either the EGR cooler, or somewhere under the hood, and then the untreated exhaust gets drawn into the cabin. They need to look harder. Oh, and don't expect to change the A/C belt on your own. It requires BMW special tools, and is a giant pain in the ass.
procedure
- Duplicate the issue.
- Replace the A/C compressor drive belt with the part number listed below.
Note: The replacement part is the E63 A/C drive belt.
