    How to scan for ABS codes

    Hello, I recently posted about a c110 scanner to read my abs light but it wont work, I have a 20 pin adapter and am using a different scanner that says it does abs codes. I used my 20 pin adapter and it works for scanning regular codes but wont connect to read abs codes. How are we supposed to scan them?

    How to scan for ABS codes

    Have you tried using the OBD2 port? I’m pretty sure you can get more data from under the dash with OBD2 and later

    Tried, didnt work. When I was getting new tires put on i asked the garage to scan it with their snap-on one and it said to use the one under the hood. So i tried that and it wont connect for anything other then like emission codes, like the one under the dash.

    On the E32 one can do a kind of stomp test to get the codes, not sure if that also works on E36, this I posted in the E32 forum
    ABS/ASC blink codes
    Only possible on newer E32/clusters
    German version: ABS/ASC-Blink-Code
    - Bremspedal und Schalter "ASC" gleichzeitig drücken
    - Zündung "an"
    - Bremspedal und Schalter loslassen
    - ASC-LEUCHTE fängt an zu blinken
    BC = BlinkCode

    BC 1 = kein Fehler
    BC 2 = EMS Fehler
    BC 3 = Motronic Fehler (DME/ EMU)
    BC 4 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler hinten links
    BC 5 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler hinten rechts
    BC 6 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler vorne rechts
    BC 7 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler vorne links
    BC 8 = ABS-Magnetventil hinten links
    BC 9 = ABS-Magnetventil hinten rechts
    BC10 = ABS-Magnetventil vorne rechts
    BC11 = ABS-Magnetventil vorne links
    BC12 = ASR-Plungenventil Fehler hinten links
    BC13 = ASR-Plungenventil Fehler hinten rechts
    BC14 = Ventilrelais Fehler
    BC15 = Rückförderpumpen Fehler
    BC16 = Speicherladeventil Fehler
    BC17 = Langzeitfehler Druchüberwachung
    BC18 = Leckage Fehler (Wird auch angezeigt wenn Druckspeicher(Gaspatrone) im ASC+T Hydraulikblock schadhaft ist (zB. leer))
    BC19 = Druck Fehler
    BC20 = Getriebebeinflussung Leitungsfehler
    BC21 = ABS/ASR-Regelgeräte Fehler
    BC22 = TD-Signal Fehler (dürfte Tachoimpuls sein)
    BC23 = Option pin Leitungs Fehler

    Zu BC 22:
    TD Signal Fehler
    Regelgerät Kl. 55
    Zündung aus
    Stecker vom ABS/ASR-Regelgerät und Motronic-Steuergerät Bank links abziehen
    Leitung vom ABS/ASR-Regelgerät Kl.55 zum Motronic- Steuerg. Kl.6 auf Unterbrechung/Plus-/und Masseschluß prüfen.
    wenn i.O.
    Fehlerspeicher Motronic auslesen
    wenn i.O.
    ABS/ASR-Regelgerät tauschen
    -------------------------------------------------------
    Translation:
    - push brake pedal and ASC switch simultaneously
    - Zündung "an" / ignition on
    - Bremspedal und Schalter loslassen /release brake pedal + ASC switch
    - ASC-LEUCHTE fängt an zu blinken/ASC light starts to blink
    BC = BlinkCode

    BC 1 = kein Fehler / no fault
    BC 2 = EMS Fehler / EMS fault
    BC 3 = Motronic Fehler (DME/ EMU)/ DME/EMU fault
    BC 4 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler hinten links/fault speed indicator rear left
    BC 5 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler hinten rechts/fault speed indicator rear right
    BC 6 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler vorne rechts/fault speed sender front right
    BC 7 = Drehzahlgeber Fehler vorne links/fault speed sender front left
    BC 8 = ABS-Magnetventil hinten links/ABS solenoid valve rear left
    BC 9 = ABS-Magnetventil hinten rechts/ABS solenoid valve rear right
    BC10 = ABS-Magnetventil vorne rechts/ABS solenoid valve front right
    BC11 = ABS-Magnetventil vorne links/ABS solenoid valve front left
    BC12 = ASR-Plungenventil Fehler hinten links/fault ASR plunger valve rear left
    BC13 = ASR-Plungenventil Fehler hinten rechts/fault ASR plunger valve rear right
    BC14 = Ventilrelais Fehler/ fault valve relay
    BC15 = Rückförderpumpen Fehler/ fault recycling pump
    BC16 = Speicherladeventil Fehler/fault storage load valve
    BC17 = Langzeitfehler Drucküberwachung/fault long time, pressure control
    BC18 = Leckage Fehler (Wird auch angezeigt wenn Druckspeicher(Gaspatrone) im ASC+T Hydraulikblock schadhaft ist (zB. leer))
    leakage fault (is also shown when pressure vessel (gas bomb) in ASC_T hydraulic block is damaged (for example empty))
    BC19 = Druck Fehler/ fault pressure
    BC20 = Getriebebeinflussung Leitungsfehler/fault wire transmission
    BC21 = ABS/ASR-Regelgeräte Fehler/fault ABS/ASR control modules ffaulty
    BC22 = TD-Signal Fehler (dürfte Tachoimpuls sein) TD-signal fault (should be the speed impulse)
    BC23 = Option pin Leitungs Fehler/option pin line fault

    Zu/to BC 22:
    TD Signal Fehler/TD signal fault
    Regelgerät Kl. 55/ control unit terminal 55
    Zündung aus /ignition off
    Stecker vom ABS/ASR-Regelgerät und Motronic-Steuergerät Bank links abziehen/disconnect from the ABS/ASR regulator unit and MOTRONIC module bank left the connectors
    Leitung vom ABS/ASR-Regelgerät Kl.55 zum Motronic- Steuerg. Kl.6 auf Unterbrechung/Plus-/und Masseschluß prüfen.
    check the line from ABS/ASR regulating unit terminal 55 to MOTRONIC- control module terminal 6 for interruption/plus-/and ground connection
    wenn in Ordnung / in case that is o.k.,....
    Fehlerspeicher Motronic auslesen/read fault codes

    Some E36 ABS modules communicate on L data line(pin 15) and others on the K data line(pin17). Your scanner probably doesnt have the ability to switch between the two and is only using K data line(Engine ecu uses K data line).

    Agree with the previous post: that 20 pin connector some have a switch .
    There’s a post somewhere on which line to switch so you can read aABS.

    I have a cable setup that works with INPA that has the 20 pin going to a box and the box is connected via rs232 to the serial port . Didn’t work well with usb

    So if im able to switch the location on the k and l pins it may work? It would be no problem to open up the 20 pin adapter i have and make some changes.

    The last post goes into detail about it but the solution was mostly for carsoft software. I have no experience with your scanner tool so i cant confirm anything but yes i took the pin 15 from the car's 20 pin connector and connected it to the K line on the diagnostic connector. The adapter cable i custom made essentially connected L to K when i needed it for ABS reading. By default, my carsoft diagnostic cable had K connected and L disconnected.

    I tried what was said in that post but still no luck. I feel like if i go ahead and buy all this like someone in the fourm said it still wont work. I have to go to a town with a dealer soon anyway maybe ill take it there to get scanned. Hopefully they dont charge too much.
