Lost only key to my e46 (2003 325i) Paid 230 at the dealership for replacement but the guy at the front desk said it may need to be programmed to start. Mentioned something about my car not having a certain package/aspect that maybe made it possible to not need it to be programmed in order to start. Looking for help or anyone with the same experience.
The very reason we order keys from the dealer is so that they start the car. The only programming you need to do is for the remote functions which could be an issue if you don't have a working key. I seem to recall you need at least one working key to add other keys. Best thing to do is after you receive your key, drive to the dealer and ask them to add it to all of your vehicles functions.

They key from the dealer comes ready to start the car. It will also unlock the car manually by inserting it in the door. Once youre in the car you can initialize the keyless fob. there are lots of video on how to do this, no second key required.
The guy at the dealership probably was confused due to the new cars that rely solely on comfort access to start(no ignition).
