Tools to remove 6 cyl oxygen sensor

Is there a particular style of 02 sensor socket that helps removal of the late 4 wire 02 sensor as fitted to 89 325i?
I've read some tell of using a combo wrench not a socket...

I have always used a box end from a regular combination wrench, but it may not fit over your plug, if not you would need to decide if you are replacing the sensor for good, or just removing it to swap in a different one. Either way you could sever the plug if it is a means to getting it out safely, and the sensor could still be kept as a back up
