My friend has a 2001 330 convertible. He somehow blew out the hydraulic system for opening and closing the top. BMW wanted $7K to repair the top, which pretty much would total the car? What are his options? I just converted an old 91 Ci back in the 90s to a manual top, but I don't know if the e46 has that option or not. I've had to lower my top before and I know a little bit about where the controls for the top are at in the car. Any ideas on getting this fixed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
The E46 did have a Manual Top option. You could replace the Automatic Top with a complete Manual Top roof assembly but converting Auto to Manual can't be done as far as I have read. I see working replacement Soft Top's often on EBay in good condition for as little as $400.
Probably has a leak. Check the fluid level in the reservoir attached to the pump. You probably need to just replace a cylinder or hose or something if the fluid is gone. Check www.newtis.info for repair procedures, component location ect. Those tops aren't that complicated so depending on your ability, you can fix it yourself. At least get another estimate from somewhere else.
