I have started considering a 2007-2010 E70. I would like to have the V8 but wonder how it compares for reliability to the N52 6 which i have had good luck with in my 2011 E90 and the 2008 that i had before. The only used BMW I have ever purchased was my e30 which was only 3 years old when i bought it. I have noticed that the V8 seems to go for not much more than the 6 and I wonder if there is a reason for that.
We have decided that we would like to have a 7 passenger vehicle so that is somewhat limiting as it appears that only 10-20% of the ones advertised online have this option. Any general suggestions on what to watch out for on the e70 would also be appreciated.

Between the oil leaks, valve stem seals smoke out the exhaust the v8 is not so good, I would go for the six clyinder

I would skip the V8, but I would also step up to a year or two newer, and get the N55. The N52 in an X5 is a total dog. It just doesn't have nearly enough power.

My understanding is the I6 is just as prone to leak, but easier to get to. We've had pretty good luck with our V8.
N62 X5 owner here. The updated N62TU they upgrade the valve seals. Mine is a 2005, and it's been fine, leaks here and there, but I have fix them all. The N62 has good power in the X5. I haven't tried the n52 engine one.
