This is the best news I could've received on a Monday.
If this passes I'll be ecstatic.

Sounds like the give a damn is over for older cars like here. If can keep on the road they will bleed us out other ways by scarce parts and newer cars. Believed we'll eventually just fade away. Probably will with majority of todays consumerism. End of another era.

I just received my 320i renewal here in NC. So my county is lenient for older cars, but i'd forgot about the age. Since over 35yrs of age, no longer requires any inspection at all. Just paid renewal and didn't even have to air the race tires up. I expected a safety inspection. Nope just pay and go. Never left the garage. They dropped all emissions testing in my county this past Dec anyways. Stopped testing due to the revenue went to the capital and funds weren't coming back local ie schools etc. So they said enough of that bs.

Shocking. Never would have thought. We have Democrat super-majorities in office and they all want us going electric soon.

This is unlikely to pass because the author of this bill Assembly Member Randy Voepel is a Republican.

i predict it won't happen and here's why......

    the history;

in the early 80's there was a bill passed in calif called BAR84. the new law called for a biennial idle emissions check, smog equipment to visually be checked and that swapping engines with engines that are older then the car's chassis would be illegal.

in the mid 90's there was a new, stricter law passed called BAR97. included in that law was a provision called AB42 that allowed a vehicle, when reached 30 years old, to be exempt from BAR97 restrictions and testing.

in 2006 a revision was made to AB42 that took away the 30 year exemption law and set a permanent exemption at 1975 or older. Period, no discussion! do you know who was responsible for this exemption law? dianne feinstein. that's right, senator dianne feinstein and if you think she's going to sit back and let her pet project be removed then you underestimate the tenacity of these california women representatives in D.C., harris and pelosi rounding out the dynamic trio.

in 2010 obama gave calif. an EPA waiver stating (in my words) that the state of california could dictate to automakers that any new cars sold in calif would have to meet or exceed a calif emission standard even if it was greater then the national EPA's and the EU's emission standards.

if you have been following the news this past week then you heard that our newest and youngest congresswoman, alexandria ocasio-cortez, a self proclaimed 'democratic socialist' from NYC has proposed a bill called the 'green new deal'. this proposed bill is absurd, but it should be noted that among the many absurdities is that within 10 years they will remove all fossil fuel powered vehicles, All Fossil Fuel Vehicles! ......... and the very first senator to endorse this bill was kamala harris, and for those who don't know, ms. harris is a senator from california and one of the possible 2020 democrat candidates for the office of presidency.

while it makes me happy to see proposals like this that would allow californians to legally register their older cars.......dont hold your breath.

For a lot of states, there is an economic incentive to NOT test the older cars, because the older cars are the most expensive ones to test and there are fewer and fewer of them each year. And when you look at the total number of miles driven each year, the percentage that can be attributed to 35+ year-old cars has got to be miniscule.

It's kind of like what I used to tell people who would brag about the mileage the got from their hybrids. I told them "My Mustang uses less gas than your Hybrid" and they would say "How is that even possible?!?" to which I would reply: "I ride my bike to work."

    LOL.

Well, another thing in the favor of states and counties, over the federal government, is older cars employ local craftsman - skilled labor. They pay income tax at the highest rates, and local sales tax.

They also will generally pay more per mile for their share of 'road tax' (fuel tax).

Whereas the overall negative effect to the local air quality is negligible. Vaping or legal Mary Jane will affect the public much more than an E21.

And then there are no more threads about "will a V8 fit my E21?"

But on a serious on topic note - this is not the first time this bill has been put up for a voted, it has been up for voted a few times over the last 5 years or so.
