    The E28 535i ZF4HP22 to ZF4HP24 conversion

Hi my name is Eddie founder of Tex Motorwerkes and I’m doing a customers E28 535i somewhat of a restoration build.after resealing his engine and rebuilding his cylinder head we took it for a test drive and noticed that his transmission wouldn’t shift properly.

His car was sitting in his garage for about 2yrs because he had an accident due to arguing with his 9 yr old

With my experience and knowledge I gave him a few options I told him I would need to remove the valve body and rebuild it with me solenoids, while doing so I saw fine grits of aluminum in the oil like glitter off a woman’s lip balm.so I had to drop the transmission, after dropping the transmission and inspecting the trans I noticed there was damage to the tabs of the input drum.

I explained the situation and was asked what’s a good option,I responded with two options.
    1.rebuild the hp22 trans

    or.......

2.find a used transmission off the 7/8 series aka hp24

    eBay-local distance-zf4hp24-search
A list of HP24 shows here and there and this price and that price until I came across one that grabbed my attention

    M70 JDM V12 AT transmission W/torque converter ZF 4HP24

I’m thinking haha this guy is hillarious JDM(scratching head and thinking why JDM that’s a euro item) well it hit me and I forgot that BMWs were also exported to Japan. Hence the factory Alpine stereo systems

After clicking on that item and reading the description,”has about 45k miles” got my attention and so I start going on a bidding war with the guy and finally we settled and I went to pick it up and saved 250 off the Buy it now including freight. 32 Mile drive is worth it. Talked to the guy and he assured me it had 45k,he has the front clip of the 850 including the firewall in his warehouse and a S72 next to it!! S72!!!!!!!! SSSSSSSSSSSS72!! Along with the original M72 that came with that HP24.

So here’s the conversion in progress and I’ll let the pictures speak for it self.

Now.. the hp24 is rated for much more torque and horsepower so I found it suitable for a stock M30B35

Wow, good luck with that. I am interested on how you will make the Vee transmission fit onto a 6? Having rebuilt the 22's and the 24's, they are totally different in every dimension. I think you will have to customize the body, cross member, wiring harness/ ecm, driveshaft, linkage, cooling lines. Might be easier to put an M60 in there with the 24, and scratch the M30?

As Dschart said, won't work but you can take some of the internal parts from the hp24 and use to beef up the hp22-

I have a fresh built hp22 by a ZF certified shop with a stalled torque converter for sale, I'll shoot you a pm.

Main differences between 4HP22 and 4HP24 used in E32 I can tell you:
    First off
    - Springs with different rates are incorporated
    - the torque converter diameter is increased to 280 mm
    - the bearing surface of the torque converter is longer to take the stronger loads
    - the converter lockup clutch diameter is increased to 300mm
    - the transmission bell housing is larger due to the increased converter size
    - the A tranfer plate is 15 mm wider in order to accept the larger a clutch
-the stator wheel shaft is now mounted with 6 countersunk screws for a tighter connection with the transfer plate
    - a new pump body was designed for the longer converter shaft bearing
    - the splines on the input shaft are longer
    - both sealing rings on the input shaft are cast iron
    - the A clutch has a larger diameter and the clutch friction surfaces are increased in size also
    - the number of plates in the B,C and D clutches was increased by one inch each
    - the one way clutch for 2nd gear has been stenghtened and riveted together
    - the one-way clutch for 3rd gear was changed from a roller type to a locking body type for greater torque
    - the planetary gear for 4 is much stronger now with forged webs
    - the output shaft diameter is increased and 2 holes are provided for more lubrication
    - the output flange has a larger bolt circle to take more force
    -the pan is deeper
    - the filter is different for the deeper pan = longer neck
    - valve body plates gasket is different
    - Last but not least, remember that early E32 have trannies with 8 pins connector and the other ones with 7 pins. My 11/88 750 has 8 pins.

As 4HP22 is also used in the Landrover V8 Defender, Range Rover Classic and the Disco 1 and these cars are usually handled very rough, there are special shops which enforce the 4HP22 with 4HP24 parts, here you can see the differences in the pics on the website of AshcroftTransmissions http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co...s/zf4hp22.html

The Electronic Control system was first introduced in 1986 and was incorporated into the totaly hydraulic 4HP-22 unit produced by ZF. It combines the hydraulic control of forward and reverse gear engagement, with electronic control for automatic upshifts from 1st thru 4th and automatic downshifts from 4th thru 1st gears.

Three different versions of valve bodies have been used on BMW vehicles, with minor differences between them.

The 1st version, designated Early "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1986 and used up thru 1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.

The 2nd version, designated Late "E-7", has 5 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in 1988 and used up thru Mid-1989. This version includes a solenoid for reverse lockout.

The 3rd version, designated "E-9", has 4 solenoids on the valve body, was introduced in Mid-1989 and used up thru 1994. This version uses a shift solenoid for the reverse lockout function.

Shogun - ? my e31 850i with ZF4HP 24 is in middle of restoration. Away to drop engine and gearbox down.
The gearbox is visibly leaking from between the output shaft splines and the output Flange.
Not the shaft seal. I have studied the drawings and think that the o ring on the shaft is the problem.
    Any comment is greatly appreciated.
Am planning to order the necessary parts and remove the rear housing to allow inspection and cleanig
the oil off the o ring groove.
Do you suggest Sealant of some kind on the splines?
I think a little would suffice as too much would be pushed into the gearbox
during installation of the output Flange

Thank you for this information - I am considering refreshing the friction plates whilst gearbox is out. Since I will be replacing the input seal and pump o ring, also rear seal , output flange O ring and tail housing gasket.
Have been searching for a ZF4HP24 repair manual - it is online but the E Book web sites providing this want my credit card number and code! (it will not be billed)? I dont wish to trust that.
Can anyone advise where this repair manual can be found?

The housing of 4HP22 and 4HP24 are the same, innards are different, bell housing is different, TC is different, and more, see details in my post #6.

The 3rd version, designated "E-9", has 4 solenoids on the valve body 1989 and used up thru 1994 it is good to use it in 750i and 750iL models whitch is has transmission case 24. This version uses a shift solenoid for the reverse lockout function. The third version for BMW 735i 1989-1990 years not shifting gears properly from forward gear to third gear the forth gear shift good.

Anyone has for sale valve body E-7 version with 5 solenoids ?
