Hi my name is Eddie founder of Tex Motorwerkes and I’m doing a customers E28 535i somewhat of a restoration build.after resealing his engine and rebuilding his cylinder head we took it for a test drive and noticed that his transmission wouldn’t shift properly.
His car was sitting in his garage for about 2yrs because he had an accident due to arguing with his 9 yr old
With my experience and knowledge I gave him a few options I told him I would need to remove the valve body and rebuild it with me solenoids, while doing so I saw fine grits of aluminum in the oil like glitter off a woman’s lip balm.so I had to drop the transmission, after dropping the transmission and inspecting the trans I noticed there was damage to the tabs of the input drum.
I explained the situation and was asked what’s a good option,I responded with two options.
1.rebuild the hp22 trans
or.......
2.find a used transmission off the 7/8 series aka hp24
eBay-local distance-zf4hp24-search
A list of HP24 shows here and there and this price and that price until I came across one that grabbed my attention
M70 JDM V12 AT transmission W/torque converter ZF 4HP24
I’m thinking haha this guy is hillarious JDM(scratching head and thinking why JDM that’s a euro item) well it hit me and I forgot that BMWs were also exported to Japan. Hence the factory Alpine stereo systems
After clicking on that item and reading the description,”has about 45k miles” got my attention and so I start going on a bidding war with the guy and finally we settled and I went to pick it up and saved 250 off the Buy it now including freight. 32 Mile drive is worth it. Talked to the guy and he assured me it had 45k,he has the front clip of the 850 including the firewall in his warehouse and a S72 next to it!! S72!!!!!!!! SSSSSSSSSSSS72!! Along with the original M72 that came with that HP24.
So here’s the conversion in progress and I’ll let the pictures speak for it self.
Now.. the hp24 is rated for much more torque and horsepower so I found it suitable for a stock M30B35
