E46 4-Cyl - Where to Start with Modifications?

So it's my first car right, obviously a 4-cyl is going to be good for that since low fuel consumption and whatnot.
But I'm already curious about giving it a bit more ooft.

I know that E36 owner's can put turbos on their 4-cyls and make their broombrooms go extra fast with all that added hp.
But my query to the Bimbims over here, what exactly can I do for a completely stock 4-cyl 318i?
I'm not particularly sold on engine-swap ideas since discounting 4-cyls just because they don't sound obnoxious is a bit of pisstake, I'd prefer to modify it instead, if at all possible.

People have put turbo's on that before but quite honestly, the amount of money, time and effort you put in is better spent on that little bit of extra petrol a 6-cyl would cost you, it gives you a lot more everything

The 318ti E36 has the same engine so you might have more luck finding info on that.

Take off the center caps. Drive a 325 in it's place. Reinstall center caps.
