    Sub Amp Help

I know this seems like a dead horse question, but I've been searching for 2 1/2 hours coming up empty handed. I've seen others w/ the same question but no concise answer, other than "get a new amp".
I will preface this by saying I am not in the position right now to add a new amp, so my question is: Using a high power head unit, is it possible to add a jumper to say pin #1, and #2 (RR input)on amp connector 2; disconnect #5 and #6 on Amp connector 1 (RR Woof output), tie them together and still retain the use of the factory crossovers for the factory tweets? (I got all the way back to threads from 2002, and no luck, also in the audio forum)
I am looking at the wiring diagram right now btw.
    Thanks in advance.

It is going to be difficult to get an answer to your question because BMW had different sound packages with different amps per package and also per year, with cut-offs in mid years. I have a production date 3/98 M Roadster with the Harmon Kardon sound package and a single amp, for instance--it is a 10 channel system with 2 subs, 4 low mids, 2 high mids and 2 tweeters. I have cut my sub inputs to the amp and sent their signal to a 2 channel amp bridged to a mono sub, but the remainder of the system is intact and works well. However, I have retained a factory head (CD43) for the clean line level output it sends to the amp. My HK amp is designed for all line level inputs and I do not think it would work with an amplified signal from the head--I believe this to be true for all Z3 factory amps, but I have no real evidence for this. The wiring diagrams are available online btw.

    Thanks.
I'm sorry I did not specify what was/is in the car. I had the business HU (now out), and the 10 channel system single amp, it had the single DVC sub (DOA) w/ the passive, I have replaced w/ two 5" woofers. And you are correct the HO HU and the amp are not friends. I guess I could always try it and put it back/ disconnect subs if it doesn't work. Wait until I get an amp and run RCA's.

If your new head unit has a separate speaker level sub output and you can remove the input/output wires from the harness connector and bridge then sure, it should work as well as possible.

I just pulled the amp out and I have the Alpine.
All the diagrams I've found so far are for the HK.
I just followed a link to "wedophones" and although it has the Alpine pin diagram listed, for every radio diagram, it says "not shown". Still looking though.

I have the Alpine amp (non HK “HiFi” setup in an MY2000 z3) and the wiring diagrams on Wedophones definitely cover this amp setup.

Thanks Mobilenet. My bad for mis-communicating again, I meant the pin assignments.
I've sewn it all back up for now.
I'm assuming the high crossovers are not passive as I pulled the power pin to the amp and got nothing at all.
I should be able to get it from the diagrams of the system assuming GE is grey, and RT is red.

GE is yellow, GR is gray
    http://www.linzi.hu/Katalogus/2008-2...0and%20IEC.pdf

    • braun BR = brown
    • blau BL = blue
    • rot RT = red
    • gelb GE = yellow
    • grau GR = gray
    • schwarz SW = black
    • weiss (weiß ) WS = white
    • grun GN = green
    • orange OR = orange
    • rosa RS = pink
    • violett VI = violet

I would put in a passive HP crossover and be done with it, cheap and reliable.

I will add an amp eventually, just bought the car, and wife just lost her job, so I have to be careful right now, it's too easy to buy cool sh*t for this car.

    Thank You for the pdf.
    Printed it today.

Mine is a 2000 2.8, so there's a decent chance it will match yours. I just had my interior in pieces, so I found my notes.

Front left high + : Yellow w/ green stripe
Front left high - : Yellow w/ brown stripe
Front left mid + : Yellow w/ gray stripe
Front left mid - : Yellow /w blue stripe
Front left low + : Yellow w/ red stripe
Front left low - : Yellow w/ brown stripe

Front right high + : Blue w/ brown stripe
Front right high - : blue w/ green stripe
Front right mid + : yellow w/ red stripe
Front right mid - : brown w/ orange stripe
Front right low + : Blue w/ red stripe
Front right low - : blue w/ brown stripe.

I see that you are in NC as well. If you are looking to replace your rear speakers I pulled mine out thinking they would be stock, but they turned out to be pretty-new-looking Rockford Fosgate 4" ones. I'd let you have them "dirt cheap".

I also have a "disco ball" Sony headunit if you want to mess with it and a modified stock sub box with the front replaced w/ MDF.

I did not go for a 5 channel sub per some recommendations on here. Since the rear speakers are small and fire directly into the back of your seat, I did not amplify them and powered them off the headunit. I bridged 2 of the channels for the kicker sub I added.

I think I have the notes for the colors of the plug behind the radio if you want it, but I pretty much tore all that out due to some dubious previous owner surgery and started over.

Thanks Pete, I think I've got it figured out. I put a Sony HU in and matched the stock (light) colors, behind the seats speakers are replaced as well. BT is a good thing to have these days. This car has lost so much value from PO's, I don't mind a bit "making it my own" and just having fun w/ it. We bought it to drive, period. I'm doing little things to it and may auto-X it...
