Lower Timing Chain Cover Gasket Headache...

    Hey guys,

I am having to replace the entire timing chain gasket... I have both timing covers (upper & lower) removed and I am about to reinstall the new gasket. Unfortunately I am having headaches with the rubber gasket that goes between the lower timing chain cover and upper timing chain cover.

But the gasket is too small

I tried stretching it to fit, but it always pops up before I can get the top half of the timing chain cover in place.

I am hoping for an easy fix, was considering heating the gasket in the oven and then installing it before it can cool off.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    J.

Try a heat gun rather than the oven.

Is this a BMW gasket or aftermarket? If it's aftermarket I'd get a BMW one. I replaced mine about a month ago and it was a perfect fit. As said before heat it up a bit before you install it. the upper cover has to be smashed down onto the lower cover to get it to seal correctly. Heating it up will make it more playable. I did not go the trick about heating it up before hand so I got the motor hot and tried to push it down. It still leaked a bit so smothered gasket sealer on the back edge.

It does look too short to be a OE gasket. The
Bentley Manual also mentions sealant, saying under "Install upper timing chain cover" to "Attach new gaskets to timing cover with light dabs of gasket sealant".

Yea I would start with the factory gaskets, maybe a bit of silicone?

Looks like the wrong part, do you have the P/N or the gasket and what year/engine is it going on?
