    Vivtrouble- need advice

Hello e24 gurus! I viewed an Euro e24 last night here in Texas and the VIN on the dash dose not match any of the numbers on the block. The dash VIN is 5547215 and the number above the starter on the block is 41643710.

This is a 1979 model, it has allot of alpina parts on it but other than that it's rough-

Do those numbers indicate an engine swap?

    Thanks

I can tell you that the numbers on the block of my '80 Euro matched the VIN. Plug in the last 7 of the block VIN into RealOem and see if that tells you anything.

Peter, Nice to see you on this forum. On the E12 based cars, The vin should match on the block. On the post 82 cars they wont. So I would think it possibly indicates an engine swap. However since it is a "grey market" car, could that vin have been assigned when federalized? The true vin of that car should be stamped on the upper right edge of the front panel of the firewall. So when looking at the firewall from the front of the car, about 12" in on the right from the inner fender along the top edge of the firewall, will be a cutout in the firewall insulation and the factory vin should be stamped right there. There aren't any other vin plates etc on the early cars other than a stamped plate/tag riveted just in front of the right hand shock tower. Any tag on the dash had to be done during federalization and that could be what the conflict is.
