    Hi Matt
I appreciate all the help! I checked for spark and I don't believe there is any. I cannot see a spark at the electrode of the plug. I laid it on the ABS unit metal shielding so the shinny part of the plug was touching the shielding.

I tried your battery trick above however that was before your edit so my procedure did not work. Maybe the aliens can help us out....I bet they could just wave an appendage over the car and like magic it would start!

I think I need to get the battery back up to full charge before I try it again.

with no spark, id think its pretty safe to say youve no injector pulses either. ive found that in INPA, resyncing the DME/EWS is under the DME. but im unsure how to go any further. i dont wanna brick your car.

No spark? So, coils aren't getting juice perhaps. I recall (don't trust my memory tho') there's a fuse for that inside the "e-box" underneath the passenger-side cabin air filter housing. You might want to check. That fuse might be in a small black plastic box with four or five others. Not the easiest little thing to open, but you may be able to test them without opening.

Here take a look at this post from the other forum. Fuse in question is EF5.

    So,
the EWS error 209 indicates something wrong with the EWS, and no, it is not fuel or gas related. Also, INPA reports a very low battery voltage of 12.05 volts at the time of the fault. Again, the damn bitch battery...!!

At this point, I'd recharge the new battery, make sure it is fully charged -it should read at least 12.6 volts.
I'd check also the fuses and electric connections to the DME (water ?). Check out also this thread about a similar issue on the E46. https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1031477

    I’d try syncing the DME~EWS.
    In DME MS43
    Main page
    Shift F6

    Nice and warm here

Rosie, we have a winter storm coming! I know you've got summer!

Is the Sync in the DME section or EWS?

OK I see in the DME section.

    I hooked INPA up again to resyc the DME EWS. When I go into this screen and chose F1 I get the message below which I think says there is a start value in the DME already. Do I need to reset it first F2 and then sync it F1;

When I hit ok does it actually resync because it does not look like it does anything? Still cranks but no start. Battery is fully charged. HELP!

That INPA report clearly states -in German- : "No start-up initialization performed in the current drive cycle".

I am no expert on this EWS/DME stuff, but it sounds like you need to re-initialize your key. Which means that you may have a bad coded rigged key, or a bad EWS....?! Or that you may just need to re-initialize your key if it is coded right.

    **solved**

Solved. It was EWS to DME sync issue and I was using F1 resyc instead of F2 reset. The car is running as it was before. Thanks for all the help guys! And a special thanks to Chedley for loaning his cable!! He's a great resource to the community!

    Cheers!

    yay...

just a btw, cranking the car trying to start it to the point of the then bad battery dying is what probably knocked it out of sync. or doing the same with a good battery will do it.

    No probs Eric.

I’d love to send you some nice weather, but I think you need to speak to your President about the facts of Global Warming.

    Sorry guys late to party.

Yes F1 should be for "either EWS or DME is virgin and they need to sneak off into the bedroom with some lube and get it on for the first time".

And then F2 should be 'reset the pointer on existing EWS tables to the beginning for both modules'. You usually do F2 twice, first time it gives you an error then second time it gives you a happy-success-party message. I'm assuming the first time it notices that they are not synced and the second time it is confirming they are synced or something.

Probably got desynced simply because of that sht battery.

HEY THERE ITS ME!!! THE #19 RESPONSE ON THIS THREAD. Wow!!!! Its crazy how identical of a scenario Im having with my 2000 540i, even down to the rat bedding found in the engine bay!!!!! Lol!!! No joke. However, my error code number is #148. EWS 3.3 Interface DME-EWS. Can you please advise whether I need to hit Shift + F6 to go into the EWS-DME Start Sync screen. If so then by selecting F2 would I be aligning the two modules together by having them both reset to code #1. Will I get some type of message confirming that it was done successfully?

Let me get out my rubber stamp... Oh here it is [kathump] Start Your Own Damn Thread
(as I often have to rant... 97.3% of the time, no, you do NOT HAVE THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS THE THREAD YOU ARE HIJACKING... in this case, totally different motor, totally different error code! )

That said, I don't think that code is the right one for sync failure, I think thats the basic "EWS and DME are not talking" code.
The more common cause of that error is a physical problem with the 2 modules talking - most often a fuse however in this case we have confirmed rodent activity so we have to really suspect munchymunchy wires.

You can certainly try alignment, its completely harmless - aside from one thing and that's still really not a big issue...

As was just immediately said before right here in this thread ^^^^ hit F2, then, after it completes, do it again.
You should find you get an error the first time and a confirmation the second time (at least on an M62TU DME it usually does that).

The only 'maybe not harmless' thing is that if the real problem is a bigger hardware issue w/ EWS/DME and wires (and there probably is), then by doing this now, you may reset only the DME and need to re-do it later once you figure out what the hardware problem was.

Did you scan the EWS module itself for errors? If you can even talk to it, I bet it will show no "DME connect" or whatever the text is in Digital Status .

Here are the errors that I received when I read the EWS:

    A. Power on reset. (0x000F 3F)
    B . (0x000000 22)
    C. Tolerance increases with key number. (0x00003 01)
    D. Key invalid because of incorrect password. (0x0011 19)
    E. invalid due to incorrect identification. (0x0010 3F)
    F. DME change code XOR error (0x000E FF)
    G. .Tolerance increases with key number. (0x001306)
    H. invalid due to incorrect change code. (0x001226)

Could you please advise as to the location of the particular fuse you referred to in your last post? Thank you.

I have got a lot to say about that. I can tell you for sure whats up there and what you have to do. But:

Where's your own thread bud? Are you being a jerk and ignoring the request, or, are you missing it again and again?
