Do I need 2 key fobs?

Hey there, first time post so mods please move if I've selected the incorrect section.

I've recently purchased a 2007 120i M Sport which unfortunately I've had to have towed to the mechanics due to a bunch of electrical issues / warning lights flashing on, car wouldn't turnover, etc. It's being covered by my insurance however the mechanic tried to sell me a second fob (I only have 1) saying that the car will stop working after 6 months or so if it does not see a second fob?

Is this true? Or is he just telling me a bunch of lies? I've tried googling this but I couldn't find anything useful.

Any help on this would be excellent.
