Contest: NAME THAT NOISE! BMW X3 E83

    Hello,

Today I got my BMW X3 2005 3.0 back from a shop who replaced my transfer case. I initially replaced my front drive shaft and subsequently developed this noise. No prior transmission issues or whining like this. I thought the bad Ujoint may have ruined the transfer case bearings so thats why I replaced the transfer case but the noise has persisted.

Any help would be extremely appreciated as I live in NW WI and have few options other than to fix this myself.

With all the warning lights on what are the faults on an unrelated topic don't run your gas tank down to nothing, the electric fuel pump sits in gas and is cooled by the gas. Running it low in gas can damage the pump over time. Can't the shop put the car in the rack, lift it and run it to diagnos

The cooling that the fuel pump needs is mostly provided by the fuel being pumped THRU the pump, not so much the fuel it's sitting in. So unless you actually run the tank dry, there's not much danger of overheating it.

And yea, OP, that's a lot of warning lights.

The only relevant fault is the 4x4 light. The others are for washer fluid and tire pressure and a bulb. None of those were on prior just resulted from extended sitting (3 months) . Airbag fault is common bullshit code on e83.

As to fuel pumps I just replaced it and I got my vehicle back from the shop with no gas, but I’m not concerned about my fuel pump I’m concerned with the bigger issue which is something out of whack in the drivetrain. Can’t even drive this vehicle. I’m giving up and taking it to a reputable shop. I’ll post results.

Thanks for taking the time to check out the video though.

It kinda sounds like the transfer case or front diff is running without fluid in it.

I had similar thoughts. When the front drive shaft is taken out, the flange on the transfer case side easily slips out and transfer case fluid comes out. It is a possible mechanism for the fluid suddenly getting low. Although, OP tells the transfer case was later replaced and taken care of.
The front diff loses some of its fluid if the drive axles are removed.
