Hello, Name is Neil i own a 2003 540i, little backround on myself would be that i have owned a few cars, from subarus to bmws. i use to own 05 sti that i built and daily drove with 500 whp also tuned by me. after that i had got into bmws had two 05 x5 4.4 model, bought an 02 4.6is x5 and redid the timing chains myself and so forth
i currently have my second e39 540i my last one was a 02 540i that i had manual swapped and had tuned along with lightweight flywheel, cat delete, and intake.
the one i currently have i will be in the process of swapping in the 4.6is engine from a parts x5 i own, i will post questions about that later
what i wanted to find out is if anyone knows of any tuning software/cable i can get and use to custom tune my 540i myself. i had tuned my subaru with alot of time and patience and it was a wild machine after.
please any help would be apprecciated.
There are no easy tuning options for the 7.2 dme, it seems to be very secretive, if you have any questions about the 4.6 conversion I know all about that
E85 fueled, Eaton m112 supercharged 4.5L M62TU, TTV racing flywheel, Spec stage 2+ clutch, 88c thermostat, eibach sway bars, wavetrac 3.15 lsd, m5 steering box, Quantum 340lph fuel pump, Dinan camber plates, some powerflex bushings, Supersprint headers, M5 cats, 2001 gas pedal upgrade and many other things done. all diy by me
So we don’t know anything at all about the 7.2 DME opensource tuning?
And also for the 4.6 swap aside from obvious oil pump and pan swap along with Ccv and valve covers, can I use the 4.6 heads? Or
Do I need to use the 4.4?
If I can use the 4.6 heads, can I utilize the stock tune for a little while? Or do I need a tune before starting up,
I’m just worried about vanos advance being to advanced for the 4.4 tune and it will crash valves against pistons
The only tuning option i've seen is here http://bmweditor.com/ I know nothing about it
The 4.6 is 100% electrically compatible after mechanical conversion it's plug and play, I had a 4.6 in my 540 no tuning needed, I currently have a 4.4 in my 4.6 x5 also no tuning needed
I highly recommend changing the head gaskets and grinding open the drivers side cooling port at back of engine, don't use the 4.4 heads
