    M54b30 cam in m50b25tu

Not sure where to park this one guys. Just finishing up my Turbo m50 E28 project and are up to the cams.
Do I need the m54b30 cam trays and lifters to throw in the m50tu? Or will the M54 cam drop right in with the helical shaved a bit?

I have a cam, but no lifters, tray or caps. I've searched for ages and got conflicting info, and alot is for M54 cams into m52. Cheers.

None of the OBD2 cams including the m54b30 cam will fit in the m50 cam trays without clearancing the trays. So you either need to grind on the trays or just use obd2 cam trays. M52 or M54 trays and lifters will fit and are lighter than m50 lifters

Why don't you just leave the stock M50B25TU cams in there? They are capable of plenty of power, so no need to change them unless there is a specific purpose.

I've had b30 intake cam in my tub for years now. As long as you use a new secondary timing chain grind the vanos gear evenly, it's no issues.

Making it better ... Help the ol slug keep up with traffic. Plus mainly just enjoyment. A better running engine. All subjective

That dyno is an m52b28 with the only change being the m54b30 intake cam installed 4 degrees advanced with one of my timing blocks I make like this

i also make a block for aligning the m50 non vanos intake cam in the exhaust side of the head, shown here on the left.

I like those blocks. So the nv intake cam used for exhaust, is that a good addition for a m50tu NA engine with m54b30 cam installed? Saw some guy say his tuner said the nv intake cam not beneficial until turboed. But it has more lift and duration... So..

Hi spydiecakes, first time ive read about a new secondary chain needed. What is the reason for this?

(Pulling from distant memory) The m54b30 intake cam is slightly longer on the front for some technical reason. Maybe a thicker spring washer plate or just a different timing chain placement. I remember it was close to 2 mm further out than m52tu/m50 cam sprocket placement.
So. With and older secondary timing chain sometimes people get a chain rattle from the chain not gliding feeling across the angle of the 2 sprockets. I used a new chain with build and it eliminated the noise for me.

I think others have welded a toleranced washers on the backside of the exhaust side secondary timing gear to bring it out appropriately.

But in your case you just got a new chain right?

The M54 cam is the same length but you need to cut 5mm off the front of the vanos spline. The M50nv cam is a couple mm longer on the front than a normal exhaust cam, so to correct the chain alignment you need to machine the front face where the sprocket bolts on. I have a lathe so I do this as a service for people.

Someguys cam blocks and price for shaving cams down were more than fair for cost of the swap 10/10 worth the effort if you don't have a set of m3 cams laying around.

Currently building up a m50b30tu to swap into my e34 and i will be keeping it NA for the time being. I already have an m54b30 laying around so will be swapping in the rotating assembly and intake cam to the m50. I also have an intake can from an nv. Would this setup work? and how can i buy these blocks for aligning the cams?
