My car recently developed a rather alarming cracking noise when turning left and right. It sounds like something is snagging and grinding. It is the loudest when the car sits stationary. I don't feel it binding or anything like that in the steering wheel.

Does anyone know what that is?
EDIT: Friend of mine said this sounds like a strut mount. Car has 102k miles on it.

Pull the caps off the top of the strut bearings/Guide Supports and add some grease to the bearings.
Might be best to pull the struts, disassemble them, clean the old grease/dirt out of the bearings and re-grease, and re-assemble.
But…grease them and determine if that was the cause…really push fresh grease in between the bearing balls.

I opened the cap on both the passenger side and the driver side, no dirt in there as far as I could tell. Squeezed a bit of wheel bearing grease in both of them, trying to get it as far down as possible, closed the caps and it seems to be completely quiet now.

I would get someone else to sit in the car and move the steering while I carefully touched various components in the suspension/steering. If it's making that much noise you will surely feel it. You could also use a mechanics stethoscope (super cheap from harbor freight) which will keep your hands away from danger areas.
Putting grease in those bearings completely eliminated the noise.
